Sneakerhead culture began 30 years ago as an underground movement. Now, thanks to the casualization of fashion and increasing dominance of ‘athleisure’ and streetwear, it has, in recent years, well and truly exploded into the mainstream. As the numbers of people interested in copping super hyped trainer releases increases, the brands that sell those trainers have profited from the opportunity by leveraging scarcity as their business model, creating a disparity between demand and supply in order to generate maximum brand hype. It’s a demand that motivates people to camp for days outside stores in order to be able to get their hands on a pair of limited edition Yeezys. It’s also a demand that has, in isolated cases, led to violence. In Chicago in 2005, two men murdered a 17-year-old for a pair of Air Jordans. In 2012, two teenagers who had successfully purchased Air Jordan 11’s were robbed and shot in New Jersey. In 2016, over 500 people lined up overnight … [Read more...] about Should you be investing your money in sneakers?
Scores of children were entered into Baby of the Year 2018, and now the winners can be revealed. Hundreds of thousands of votes have now been counted and verified, and the top three babies amassed a whopping total of 90,000 votes between them. Sweet little Carter Barnard has been crowned the winner of this year's competition. Parents Abby Gorvin, 24, and James Barnard, 29, were beaming with pride as they accepted the winning title with their smiling 11-month old baby boy. Carter's mum, Abby, said that both her and his father were "amazed" that he had won the whole competition, and it follows a "nice tradition" as James was also Baby of the Year when he was little. Even Carter's great-granddad, who lives in Scotland, sent money down to Abby, so he could help contribute to buying the tokens. She said: "I'm amazed. I'm very, very happy. "Carter's dad won when he was little and it's a nice little tradition for him now." Carter has won a £300 high street shopping voucher, as well as a … [Read more...] about This little boy is officially Plymouth’s Baby of the Year
It's set to be a pretty rough day on Saturday (December 15) with heavy rain and strong winds across the South West. Yesterday the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning with people warned to expect flooding, road delays, power cuts and the cancellation of some festive events. But when will the warning end? The Met Office's warning runs from 6am to 6pm today. Throughout the day it says the rain will be "heavy and persistent" with gale force winds, especially around coastal and hilly areas. Drier weather is expected to come across Cornwall from the west through the late afternoon and the wind and rain should clear for all throughout the evening. Overnight the wind will drop with a few scattered showers mainly affecting coastal areas. There may also be patchy frost overnight. Sunday is a different story with sunny spells and scattered showers. However, during the afternoon, a more persistent band of rain and stronger winds are expected to move east. And the week ahead? The Met Office … [Read more...] about This is when the weather warning will officially come to an end
Retired from their former life as teachers’ chairs, two wooden seats have found modest fame in their second life as art and literature props. Artists and writers, journalists and actors with links to the city are probably very familiar with the two humble and unassuming seats that spend much of their time as admired accent pieces in Little Acorns Bookstore at Bedlam in Pump Street. However, the uninitiated might be surprised to know that the two seats have a secret life, appearing on stage in major drama productions, have made guest appearances on television, are sought after as conversation pieces on radio and are heavily into being abused with a permanent marker by the rich and famous as well as the common man... who deface their surfaces by autographing them. There are now over 130 autographs on both the Legenderry Writers’ Chair and the Theatre and Media Chair.“I have had the two chairs in my possession for 10 years and when I first opened the book store … [Read more...] about Are you sitting comfortably?
