Budget 2021: Labour to vote against stealth Income Tax raid on families in U-turn

· March 7, 2021 ·

Labour will vote against the Tories' £8bn-a-year stealth raid on Income Tax this week, a Shadow Cabinet Minister revealed today. Shadow Foreign Secretary Lisa Nandy said the party would try to block plans to freeze income tax thresholds until 2026. The challenge is unlikely to succeed as Boris Johnson has a working Commons majority of more than 80 seats. The move marks a swift U-turn days after Shadow Chancellor Anneliese Dodds indicated the party would support the freeze. Ms Dodds said on Thursday that it would have been wrong for Rishi Sunak to impose the freeze "right now", but it will only kick in from April 2022. She added: "In the future, we're not going to oppose change to that personal allowance, the freezing of it that the Chancellor set out for the future. "Because actually what the Conservatives have done around this previously has benefited the best-off most. And they've not for example backed low income families with social security in the way they needed … [Read more...] about Budget 2021: Labour to vote against stealth Income Tax raid on families in U-turn

Fulham denied deserved point against Spurs as Var rules out equaliser for Mario Lemina handball

· March 4, 2021 ·

I s this really what anybody signed up for? This should have been a story of gutsy Fulham’s fightback and an encouraging step towards Premier League safety, and yet it became another ridiculous Var controversy. Other than the Tottenham Hotspur supporters who will hope their team might be back in a fight for Champions League qualification, nobody in their right mind would have denied Josh Maja an equaliser. And yet a Var review decided that Mario Lemina had somehow handled the ball that was smashed at close range into his left arm by Davinson Sanchez before Maja reacted quickest to turn a shot past Hugo Lloris. No wonder the Fulham players surrounded referee David Coote at the final whistle and manager Scott Parker did remarkably well not to lose his cool while making his frustration clear. “I understand why the goal was disallowed, but I don’t agree with it,” said Parker. “We are trying to make the game so pure and sterile, and trying to control every moment. “What we want is … [Read more...] about Fulham denied deserved point against Spurs as Var rules out equaliser for Mario Lemina handball

US warns Iran will face ‘strongest sanctions in history’ if it doesn’t change course

· May 21, 2018 ·

Iran will face the "strongest sanctions in history" if it doesn't change course, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has warned. Following US President Donald Trump's withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, Tehran has now been issued with a list of 12 demands by Washington. In his first major policy speech since taking on the role of America's top diplomat last month, Mr Pompeo detailed the requirements Iran must abide by in a new agreement. This would replace the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), signed under Barack Obama but branded the "worst deal ever" by Mr Trump even before he took office. The US will "apply unprecedented financial pressure" to force Iran into new negotiations, Mr Pompeo said on Monday. Advertisement "These will end up being the strongest sanctions in history by the time we are complete," he declared, also issuing a promise that the US will ensure "Iran has no possible path to a nuclear weapon, ever".
