AN author has resorted to using wheelie bins to save a parking space outside her house. Helen Barrell claims her road in Sandwell, West Midlands , is constantly clogged up by parents on the school run, leaving her nowhere to pull up. The 43-year-old said the nearby primary has no parking facilities meaning mums, dads and teachers block her street instead. Helen, who has lived in her home for 12 years, said things have become so bad she has reserved a spot outside with her bins. She told BirminghamLive : "The road I live in is right by a primary school which doesn't have any parking for staff, so they all park on my road and other roads nearby. "And at school dropping-off and picking-up time, parents all try to park in the road too. Europa League: Filip Kostic and Frankfurt’s fairytale run
It seemed as if he was a good as gone, and as a result there was a sense of shock among the Eintracht Frankfurt fans. Last summer Filip Kostic looked to be on his way to Serie A side Lazio – away from Germany and away from Eintracht. For several days this caused a good deal of turmoil at the club. In the end though, dissatisfied with the money offered by the Italian club, Eintracht refused to let him leave. So Kostic stayed put and the Serbian international got down to the business of playing himself back into the hearts of the Eintracht faithful – especially with his performances in the Europa League . Never to be forgotten by the fans is his brace against Barcelona in the Camp Nou in the quarterfinals, a game he described as "the best game of my career." Now Eintracht are in the final. Better than the legendary Uwe Bein Filip Kostic is the heart of Frankfurt's game . He provides the impetus, hits pinpoint crosses, more than almost anyone else in the Bundesliga. He put the … [Read more...] about Europa League: Filip Kostic and Frankfurt’s fairytale run
Secrets and Lies in the School Cafeteria
Late on a fall afternoon, a skeleton crew staffed the cafeteria at New Canaan High School, in Connecticut. Custodial workers cleaned up the day’s remains while one of the cooks prepped for the evening’s athletic banquet. To hear more feature stories, see our full list or get the Audm iPhone app. A woman entered quietly through the back door, the one designated for deliveries and employees. She wore a jacket over a loose gown. She clutched something to her chest that appeared to be a bag connected to an IV. “What are you doing here?” one of the workers asked. The woman said nothing. She shuffled to her small office. The door clicked shut. The workers exchanged looks. They’d heard that Marie Wilson had been undergoing treatment for breast cancer. She had every right to stay home and rest. Yet here she was, hobbling into the kitchen near sunset, reporting for duty. There would be more days like this one. Days when Wilson endured life’s worst moments—a grandson’s leukemia … [Read more...] about Secrets and Lies in the School Cafeteria
Get the look: Maxine Brady’s amazing New York coffee shop inspired kitchen
Maxine Brady is proof that you don’t need Gordon Ramsay around to suffer a kitchen nightmare. Maxine is an interior stylist from Brighton and shares her immaculate peppermint Victorian terrace house with her white fluffy dog, Teddy. But it wasn’t always so pretty. When she moved in, the house had been empty for seven years and came complete with an overgrown garden, leaking roof, horrible 1970s staircase and orange pine floorboards. Then there was the kitchen… ‘The kitchen was awful. There was a bank of 1990s beige wall and base units, an awkward corner sink and drafty back door,’ Maxine says. ‘The fridge was positioned in a corner cupboard. It was so cold in the winter you couldn’t spend much time in here. In the summer, it wasn’t much better as snails would trail across the floor. ‘When I ripped out the kitchen, I could see that water had been running down the back wall from the bathroom above into the plug socket. It was lucky I didn’t electrocute myself when … [Read more...] about Get the look: Maxine Brady’s amazing New York coffee shop inspired kitchen

Inside ‘sophisticated’ cross-border drug tunnel the length of six football fields after $25million narcotics bust
US authorities have found a cross-border drug-smuggling tunnel decked with a rail system and electricity, in a $25million narcotics bust. The "sophisticated" pathway is the length of six football fields and runs from Tijuana in Mexico to San Diego, California. It runs one-third of a mile, four feet deep in diameter, and about six stories deep. Police say it was discovered on Friday near San Diego's Otay Mesa border, an area where more than a dozen other sophisticated tunnels have been found. They seized 1,762 pounds of cocaine, 165 pounds of meth, and 3.5 pounds of heroin as part of the investigation. Additionally, six California residents between the ages of 31 to 55 were charged in connection. How the EU spent billions to halt migration from Africa
Faced with hundreds of thousands of refugees arriving in EU countries in 2015, policymakers from member states felt the pressure to show a quick reaction. Convening with the leaders of several African countries in the Maltese capital, Valletta, they decided to fill a pot of money. This money was not dedicated to helping integrate the thousands of people who had arrived in the European Union. Instead, the so-called EU Emergency Trust Fund for Africa (EUTF) was supposed to "address the root causes of irregular migration" so that fewer Africans might try to make their — often dangerous — way to Europe. Was this goal reached six years and €5 billion later? Together with partner newsrooms within the European Data Journalism Network, DW is taking stock of the EUTF. More than 250 projects were initiated through to the official end of the project assignment phase in December 2021, and many of them are still up and running, with the peak disbursement of EUTF funds in summer 2020. With the … [Read more...] about How the EU spent billions to halt migration from Africa

We’re FURIOUS after cops installed a ‘cash cow’ 20mph speed camera down hill… it’s already caught 1,000 drivers in a day
FURIOUS drivers have slammed a region's first 20mph speed camera as a 'cash cow' on a 'rat run' - after OVER 1,000 were caught on its first day. The speed camera was launched for the first time this week on Old Laira Road in Plymouth, and at 20mph is the slowest speed detector in the entire Devon and Cornwall police force area. Before its introduction this week, the camera had an eight week testing period that saw a whopping 23,500 road users caught - including over 1,000 in its first day. Although those drivers avoided prosecution during the test period, the 140 people snapped on the camera's first official day weren't so lucky. Carl White, a café owner whose restaurant is near Old Laira Road, told The Sun Online: “It is an absolute nightmare, the limit is dangerously slow." And he added it was "absolutely" a cash cow - adding: “I think they are doing all they can to rob people.” Most read in UK News HEATING UP Heatwave roasts Britain on … [Read more...] about We’re FURIOUS after cops installed a ‘cash cow’ 20mph speed camera down hill… it’s already caught 1,000 drivers in a day
Train companies face struggle to introduce social distancing in carriages without clear guidance
Train companies face the risk of transport chaos as they required to maintain the two metre social distancing in carriages but without any guidance yet on how to achieve it. Train services are due to increase to 70 per cent of capacity from next Monday, May 18th, as part of the first phase of easing Britain out of the coronavirus lockdown although there are fears that mixed messaging over the weekend could lead to a sharp increase in passengers today (Mon). Grant Shapps, the Transport Secretary, acknowledged that maintaining the two metre distance in carriages will slash the numbers of passengers by as much as 90 per cent, meaning only one in 10 will be able to travel in trains compared with before the pandemic. The Government has promised guidance this week on how the social distancing could be achieved but has yet to publish leaving train companies in the dark. “We are going to rely on the public to do the right thing and stay at home unless they have to travel,” said a train … [Read more...] about Train companies face struggle to introduce social distancing in carriages without clear guidance
