Woodlawn High School running back Jay’veon Haynes committed to the UL Ragin’ Cajuns. Woodlawn coach Marcus Randall confirmed it, saying the Cajuns are getting a speedy running back. “I think he did kind of fall under the radar (in recruiting), but once teams started seeing his home run hitting ability and matching that up with the track times he’s been putting up, it was almost a no-brainer,” Randall said. Haynes shared the backfield with highly recruited Amani Givens last season along with quarterback Rickie Collins, a Purdue commitment. The 5-foot-10, 170 pound Haynes has shown the ability to run inside, catch the ball out of the backfield and do it all with elite track speed. “He’s an all-around kind of back,” Randall said. “He can run it out of the backfield, catch it. He’s a 10.6-second (100-meter dash) guy, so once he hits the hole and get into daylight, there ain’t no catching him. He’s a home run hitter.” With Givens now graduated, most of the workload will fall … [Read more...] about Woodlawn’s speedy running back has committed to the Cajuns, but his stock is rising

Southern seeking No. 1 SWAC tournament seed in series vs. Alcorn State
The Southern baseball team hasn’t had much luck in nonconference games this season, but the Jaguars’ performance at UNO on Tuesday hints that they are nearing postseason mode. Southern dropped a 5-4 heartbreaker at UNO while playing a solid all-around game going into the final weekend of Southwestern Athletic Conference play at home against Alcorn State. The surging Jaguars (21-29, 18-9) are tied with Prairie View for the West Division lead. They need a sweep against the hapless Braves (2-36, 2-25) and a loss by PVU to get the No. 1 seed in their bracket for next week’s conference tournament at Regions Field in Birmingham, Alabama. Southern coach Chris Crenshaw said his team has been living up to the program standards lately and still has room for improvement. He’s also reminding his team that the job isn’t finished. “We’re getting close to (the top of our game),” Crenshaw said. “We’ve got our best baseball ahead of us. “I let them know we can’t take (Alcorn) lightly. We’ve … [Read more...] about Southern seeking No. 1 SWAC tournament seed in series vs. Alcorn State
Killing of quarter-acre dream only benefits council coffers
Steve Stannard is a former Massey University academic and small business owner in Manawatū. OPINION: We live in a decent sized section in Palmerston North city. It’s a back section, so a good chunk of that is driveway, but since the footprint of our house is not big, there is plenty of lawn to mow and space for a vegetable garden. When the kids were young there was space to kick a ball, throw a frisbee, and have water fights on a rare hot day. The kids even constructed their own mountain bike track around the front yard, destroying the garden along the way. Cajuns head into final Sun Belt series with two objectives in mind, sort of
UL’s approach heading into its final Sun Belt series of the season against Little Rock starting at 6 p.m. Thursday at Russo Park is mostly straight forward. In some ways, it’s not. “So it’s kind of 50-50 for me right now,” UL coach Matt Deggs said. “I think it’s preparation to win the tournament and working to win every game.” Game 2 is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday with Saturday’s 4 p.m. contest finalizing the regular season before the Sun Belt tournament gets underway Tuesday in Montgomery, Alabama. Conventional wisdom is UL’s only NCAA regional hopes rest in winning the conference tournament title after getting swept at Texas State this past weekend. Currently, UL stands fourth in the Sun Belt standings with an RPI of 55. But with the possibility of games against Texas State (38 RPI) or Georgia Southern (6), Deggs isn’t ready to totally throw in the towel. “You never say never, right?” he said. “If we can keep rolling and run through this weekend — which is going to … [Read more...] about Cajuns head into final Sun Belt series with two objectives in mind, sort of

Why do people still buy personalised number plates?
By Laura Francis Published 6 May 2013 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Last year the UK's Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency raised £67m from the sale of personalised number plates. But why do people still buy them? Lord Alan Sugar has one: AMS 1. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge drove away from their wedding with one that read JU5T WED and broadcaster Chris Evans has several. But it's not only the rich and famous who buy personalised number plates. Despite the recent economic downturn, they are still big business. Personalised plates are regularly used in films and television series to hint that a character is a braggart or an egomaniac or just a bit desperate for attention.
