The major restructuring plan announced by the department store giant is aimed at putting an end to its financial freefall--the KarstadtQuelle group will have pre-tax losses of up to €1.3 billion ($1.6 billion) this year. But in getting itself out of the red by possibly shutting 43 percent of its stores, it could help to cripple entire town centers, which are heavily dependent on the big chain's ability to lure consumers. "In many cities, the big stores function as magnets for shoppers," Jan Blanek, a researcher at the Urban Planning Institute at the University of Stuttgart, told DW-WORLD. "When those shopping magnets pull out, a large number of customers stay away as well." That has serious ramifications for city centers that are already struggling to attract customers. The weak national economy and planned reforms of the welfare system and labor market have spoiled the mood of many shoppers, who are staying away from stores in droves. The closing of a major retail center, … [Read more...] about Germany’s Crippled City Centers
CEO Karl-Gerhard Eick said he would ask for a major loan to restructure its business. The company will focus on making its core business profitable again, Eick said Monday in a telephone conference. The restructuring costs are in addition to 776 million euros in loans, which the company will need to renegotiate with banks by mid-June. Besides Karstadt stores, the Essen-based company also owns mail-order firms Quelle and Primondo and travel firm Thomas Cook. While Eick indicated that the company was rethinking its mail order business, he said there were no plans to part with Thomas Cook. Many analysts had predicted that Arcandor would sell off its 52 percent stake in Europe's second largest travel firm. Thomas Cook said last month that its summer bookings were down 16 percent compared to last year, as worries about the economy have caused more people to stay home this year. Despite the financial crisis, Thomas Cook remains part of Arcandor's "core business," Eick said. … [Read more...] about Restructuring in store for Karstadt parent company
"The revolution has begun," announced BMW's director of development, Herbert Diess, at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt. Surrounded by video screens, he presented the star of his presentation: BMW's new electric i3 car. What's truly revolutionary about the car is its body: rather than being made of heavy metal, it's made of light-weight carbon fiber. BMW says shifting to carbon fiber will counteract the extra weight of the battery. It's heavy but will allow for an extended range when fully charged. The development also aims to catapult this expensive material - which so far has only been used in the aeronautics industry and Formula 1 car racing - from the luxury sector to the mass market. And to get there, BMW has entered a joint venture with specialists, SGL Carbon. Carbon rather than nuclear waste In the 1980s, the industrial grounds at Wackersdorf, Bavaria, were the scene of protests by local residents, who were opposed to a planned nuclear waste reprocessing … [Read more...] about BMW sets its sights on innovative carbon-fiber future with i3 electric car
