A lifelong member of Scientology who spent three years serving as the personal aide to Shelly Miscavige has filed a lawsuit against the controversial religious organization. The woman, who is identified in the lawsuit as Jane Doe, filed a complaint for damages in Los Angeles Superior Court this week that lists 14 causes of action, including: false imprisonment, kidnapping, libel, slander, human trafficking and negligence. Doe also details her close relationship with the wife of Scientology leader David Miscavige, and details what had been happening in the days and months leading up to her alleged disappearance. The court filing alleges that Miscavige 'became increasingly hostile and verbally abusive towards his wife' around 2005, and soon after Shelley was removed as her husband's assistant and Doe was forced to perform manual labor. Then, in 2006, Doe 'witnessed a dark-colored tinted vehicle pull up to the main building' at Scientology's Gold Base, at which point … [Read more...] about ‘Distraught’ Shelly Miscavige was ‘dragged’ off by ‘unidentified men’ after her ‘abusive’ husband ‘removed her from his office’ claims her assistant as she sues Church of Scientology for kidnapping

Sorry to Bother You review – weirdo workplace satire may become a cult classic
Rapper Boots Riley’s first feature film shows a great deal of spirit and promise, and further secures Lakeith Stanfield as the one of the key performers of the moment. That’s my very polite way of saying I respect this movie, but wanted to like it more than I actually did. Despite being about serious matters (labor relations, systematic oppression, racial microaggressions), Sorry to Bother You is slight and raggedy, but when it leans into its surreal, midnight movie instincts it proves engaging and amusing. Cassius Green (Stanfield, once again immediately sympathetic with just a glance) lands a crappy job at a scummy call centre. His male managers look like they haven’t bathed in months; the female one (a very funny Kate Berlant) has one of those stapled-on smiles that makes you want to leap from a building. The movie gets into gear when Cassius makes his first sales calls: his desk “drops” into the home of whomever he’s dialled-up, no matter what … [Read more...] about Sorry to Bother You review – weirdo workplace satire may become a cult classic

Northern Ireland: Veterans mark 50th anniversary of ‘Troubles’ deployment
Hundreds of British ex-military personnel on Saturday took part in the 50th anniversary commemoration of the British army's deployment to Northern Ireland. A parade, which included former members of the elite airborne Parachute Regiment and the Royal Engineers, took place in the city of Lisburn, southwest of Belfast. Organizers said the focus of the parade was to remember the 722 soldiers who lost their lives during what became the British military's longest ever deployment. I’m NOT dropping out of 2020 race says Cory Booker after failing to make the stage in next Democratic debate
Cory Booker will remain in the Democratic presidential race even though he does not expect to qualify for next week's primary debate, he announced Thursday, after a burst of fundraising support has given him the resources he needs to continue his bid. 'Thanks to the outpouring of support over the past few weeks, we know there's a path to victory, and we no longer need the debate stage to get there,' Booker tweeted. While Booker has hit the grassroots fundraising threshold to qualify for the December primary debate, his campaign acknowledged it doesn't expect him to meet the polling threshold. He would need to draw 4% support in four qualifying polls by midnight Thursday, and he currently has none. 'Path to victory.'
