Anastasia Gulej makes no attempt to veil her hatred for Vladimir Putin: the Russian leader, she says, is “evil” and no different to Stalin and Hitler . It’s a bold statement, but she is one of the few people left alive in the world personally qualified to make such a judgement. The 96-year-old is currently living as a refugee in Germany having fled her home in Kyiv shortly after Putin ordered his forces to invade Ukraine in late February. After sheltering in her cellar for a few days, she was eventually persuaded by friends to ignore her “heart and legs” and leave. Packing her life into two suitcases, she moved with her cat to Lviv and later to Bad Kosen, where she now lives with her daughter. But she has already survived much worse. As a young child she lived through the Holodomor, Stalin’s man-made famine that claimed the lives of millions of Ukrainians. A few years later the dictator’s Great Terror swept through the Soviet Union, a wave of repression and purges that … [Read more...] about ‘Putin as bad as Hitler and Stalin’ says Holocaust survivor who has suffered under all three

Buffalo shooting stirs painful memories in New Zealand, bans manifesto
New Zealand's acting chief censor has placed a temporary ban on people in the country sharing the manifesto allegedly written by a teenager arrested in connection with a mass shooting in Buffalo, which contains similarities to the 2019 terrorist attack in Christchurch. According to Radio New Zealand (RNZ) , Rupert Ablett-Hampson said the manifesto allegedly shared by Buffalo shooting suspect Payon Gendron, 18, was inspired by the Christchurch white supremacist attack at a mosque and Islamic center where 51 people were killed . Gendron, from Conklin, was arraigned on a murder charge on Saturday after he allegedly killed 10 people in the mass shooting which authorities described as "racially motivated violent extremism." In the manifesto, shared online before the shooting, Gendron allegedly wrote he was inspired by Christchurch shooter Brenton Tarrant as well as other people who had carried out racist murders. Tarrant also shared a meme-riddled white supremacist manifesto … [Read more...] about Buffalo shooting stirs painful memories in New Zealand, bans manifesto
Russia likely lost “one third” of ground force in Ukraine: UK Defense
Russia's military has likely lost "one third" of the ground combat force it initially committed to fight in Ukraine at the outset of the conflict in February, the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defense assessed in a Sunday report. Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the full-scale unprovoked assault on Ukraine on February 24, drawing rapid international condemnation and backlash. Although Putin reportedly believed that Russian troops would quickly take control of much of the Eastern European nation's territory and topple its government in Kyiv, they have largely failed to conquer any major cities or achieve key objectives. "Russia has now likely suffered losses of one third of the ground combat force it committed in February," the British military reported, sharing an update on its assessment of the war in a Twitter thread. "Russian forces are increasingly constrained by degraded enabling capabilities, continued low morale and reduced combat effectiveness. Many of … [Read more...] about Russia likely lost “one third” of ground force in Ukraine: UK Defense
Patron Saint Of Journalists? Pope Francis Canonizes Priest Who Opposed Nazis And Was Martyred At Dachau, 9 Others | The Daily Wire
Pope Francis canonized 10 new saints in the Catholic Church this Sunday, including a priest martyred by the Nazis during the Holocaust who has been proposed as a patron saint of journalists. At a special canonization Mass Sunday, the Pope declared that the 10 men and women whose causes had met the necessary requirements, would be added to the names of saints officially recognized by the Church. The list included 5 priests, 4 nuns, and and Indian convert who was martyred for his faith. “To serve the Gospel and our brothers and sisters, to offer our lives without expecting anything in return, any worldly glory: this is a secret and it is our calling,” Francis said during his homily at the Mass. “That was how our fellow travelers canonized today lived their holiness. By embracing with enthusiasm their vocation — as a priest, as a consecrated woman, as a lay person — they devoted their lives to the Gospel. They discovered an incomparable joy and they became brilliant reflections of … [Read more...] about Patron Saint Of Journalists? Scheming Sir Keir Starmer risks it all as he tries to turn the tables on Boris Johnson over ‘beergate’
As he returned from celebrating Labour’s local election gains in Barnet on Friday afternoon, Sir Keir Starmer decided he would be forced to stake his entire political career on a curry he had eaten 12 months before. While activists were jubilant that Labour had seized control of three London councils, their leader sat in the party’s headquarters and struck a serious tone with his closest aides. He was seriously considering announcing he intended to resign if he was fined over “beergate”. It comes as Labour says it can prove Sir Keir's team worked past 1am on the night of "beergate", the Guardian reports. The story, which had plagued Sir Keir for almost two weeks, came to a head on Friday lunchtime, when The Telegraph reported that police were launching a full-scale police inquiry into his decision to eat curry and drink beer with staff while campaigning in Durham in April 2021. “On Friday, when Keir came back to Southside, he was already of the opinion that it was the … [Read more...] about Scheming Sir Keir Starmer risks it all as he tries to turn the tables on Boris Johnson over ‘beergate’

Margaret Thatcher statue egged and booed after being erected in Grantham
Eggs have been thrown after a statue of Baroness Margaret Thatcher was lowered into place in the former prime minister's hometown of Grantham. Within hours of the monument being erected on Sunday, loud booing could be heard from some motorists as they drove past, with one man shouting: "Tear it down!" Other less vocal passers-by could be seen taking selfies with statue. The £300,000 statue was originally intended for Parliament Square in Westminster, but it was decided that it would be erected in Lincolnshire instead, due to fears of a "motivated far-left movement... who may be committed to public activism". Initially approved back in 2019 and delayed due to COVID, the 20ft statue was finally erected on its 10ft-high granite plinth, situated in between statues of Sir Isaac Newton and Frederick Tollemache in the town's Civic Quarter. Queen’s Platinum Jubilee: Six-minute flypast featuring Red Arrows, Spitfires and Hurricanes to follow monarch’s birthday parade
A six-minute flypast featuring more than 70 aircraft including the Red Arrows will take place over Buckingham Palace following the Queen's birthday parade during the Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The traditional event, with dozens of aircraft from the Royal Navy, the Army and Royal Air Force, will take to the sky on the first day of the royal celebrations on 2 June, according to the Ministry of Defence (MoD). The Queen is expected to watch from the palace balcony with other members of the royal family - however, the Duke of York and Duke and Duchess of Sussex will not form part of that group . Earlier this month, the Palace announced that the Trooping The Colour balcony appearance would be limited to working members of her family. The Sussexes stepped away from royal duties in 2020, and the Duke of York was stripped of his royal patronages and military titles due to the sex abuse allegations against him.
