Manchester's Key 103 became Hits Radio this morning - as bosses took the radio station national for the first time. A new breakfast show fronted by Key 103’s Gemma Atkinson alongside new co-hosts Gethin Jones and Dave Vitty launched the new Hits Radio station at 6am on Monday. After Take That’s Greatest Day was played to herald Hits Radio’s arrival (a song voted for by readers of the M.E.N.), the new presenters announced the new dawn of broadcasting from the studios at Castle Quay in Castlefield. It makes Hits Radio the first national commercial radio station to be based in Manchester. And it was former Blue Peter presenter Gethin who got the honours of saying the first words on the breakfast show. Claims that the BBC Music's Biggest Weekend was a "misuse of licence fee payers' money" have been rubbished by a leading Coventry politician. Despite a successful weekend of music across four UK cities, one Conservative MP blasted the BBC for the event, claiming that it was a waste of money. Andrew Bridgen, the Member of Parliament for North West Leicestershire was reported by the Daily Mail as saying the event was "promoting and lining the pockets of super-rich pop stars seems a complete misuse of licence fee payers’ money, but then the BBC do have £4billion of taxpayers’ money to fritter away each year". And while the BBC have been quick to defend the Biggest Weekend across the country, Coventry South MP Jim Cunningham has hailed the weekend as a great success in the next City of Culture.
