Surgery under threat as UK blood supplies plunge

July 5, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Blood supplies in Britain have dropped to worrying levels, with the NHS forced to recall former staff to run donation centres and donors urged to come forward. NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) said it had launched critical incident plans and was doing everything it could to avoid having to ask hospitals to delay non-urgent surgery. The supply problems are being caused by staff shortages due to Covid, leading to some donors having appointments cancelled. Virus cases in England have risen by 33 per cent in the past week , according to the Government’s coronavirus dashboard, while the Office for National Statistics (ONS) estimates that around 2.3 million people in Britain are currently infected. NHSBT said it was redeploying staff from other parts of the country to fill the gaps and was increasing calls for new donors to come forward in areas where there were still appointments available. If supplies do not pick up soon, the NHS will be forced to issue an amber alert and ask … [Read more...] about Surgery under threat as UK blood supplies plunge

Germany plans to ease rules for formal changes of gender

June 30, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

The German government on Thursday presented plans to make it easier for transgender people to formally change their name and gender, ending decades-old rules that require them to get expert assessments and a court's authorization. Under the planned “self-determination law,” adults would be able to change their first name and legal gender at registry offices without further formalities. The existing “transsexual law,” which took effect in 1981, currently requires individuals to obtain assessments from two experts whose training and experience makes them “sufficiently familiar with the particular problems of transsexualism” and then a court decision to change the gender on official documents. Over the years, Germany 's top court struck down other provisions that required transgender people to get divorced and sterilized, and to undergo gender-transition surgery. The existing law “breathes the spirit of the '70s,” Germany's minister for families, Lisa Paus, said. “At … [Read more...] about Germany plans to ease rules for formal changes of gender

Giant saltwater crocodile found with mysterious surgical plate in stomach, police open missing persons investigation

December 23, 2019 by www.newsweek.com

The contents from the stomach of a 15-foot-long crocodile in Australia may have yielded a gruesome clue about the fate of a man reported missing 13 years ago, it has been reported. Back in July, John Lever, who owned the Koorana Crocodile Farm, in Rockhampton, Queensland, found the creature that he called MJ dead. After its death, which followed several months of it not being able to eat, its stomach was opened up. Lever was left scratching his head when he saw that the stomach contained an orthopedic plate with six stainless steel screws. He told Australia's ABC News in July: "Obviously whatever bone he'd taken in that had had the operation performed on it, had been eaten away by the crocodile's stomach juices and just left the stainless steel plate with the six screws in it." It sparked a probe into whether it was used in the veterinary or medical industries but turned out to be from someone who had had surgery to have a metal plate put in to fix a broken leg bone. Police … [Read more...] about Giant saltwater crocodile found with mysterious surgical plate in stomach, police open missing persons investigation

Dramatic footage has emerged of a deadly US military accident in which a state-of-the-art hybrid aicraft crashed into the side of a warship five years ago. Three marines died and 23 narrowly escaped drowning when the MV-22 Osprey veered into the US Green Bay while trying to land on its deck off the coast of Australia in August 2017. Games Inbox: Single-player games under threat, Guardians Of The Galaxy 2, and inFamous apathy

July 4, 2022 by metro.co.uk

The Monday letters page thinks there should be more family friendly video games, as one reader doubts there’ll be a F-Zero comeback. To join in with the discussions yourself email [email protected] True to form single-player tweet that they had the director of God Of War berating them, not to mention the boss of their own Respawn studio! It’s even funnier given they were trying to be hip with the kids by carrying on a TikTok meme. I do feel sorry for whatever low level schlub actually wrote the tweet though and how they just automatically connected EA with not liking single-player games. What can you really except given how often EA has talked them down? Even though two of its biggest upcoming games – Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and the Dead Space remake – have no multiplayer at all. Single-player will always be under threat as long as multiplayer is more profitable but at the moment things seem to be going pretty well. At the moment, my main concern is … [Read more...] about Games Inbox: Single-player games under threat, Guardians Of The Galaxy 2, and inFamous apathy
