You have to admire the ambition of an inner-city high school that calls itself Johnson College Prep. Especially when a third of the students have no permanent home and many dodge violence just to get to class. But the students in this Chicago public school believe in their name. They've done the work. They've been accepted to college. Trouble is, few have the money to go. Johnson College Prep needed something like a miracle. And we were there when the miracle called Hope Chicago arrived. Johnson College Prep, on Chicago's South Side, embraces nearly 500 students. Jonas Cleaves: Every student that walks in our door deserves an opportunity to be engaged by staff members who love them for no other reason except the fact that they are one of our students. Principal Jonas Cleaves knows the names and the dreams in the halls of Johnson College Prep. Scott Pelley: College is your middle name. Jonas Cleaves: Absolutely. Absolutely. That's why we're here. We want kids to have a shot. … [Read more...] about Hope Chicago: Charity sending students from Chicago high schools to college for free

Hāwera’s new combined school to open in 2023
Hāwera’s new year 7-13 school will launch at the beginning of 2023 using the existing high school buildings and temporary classrooms. Both Hāwera Intermediate and Hāwera High Schools will close at the end of the year, and the new school will open next year with 1000 students, the Ministry of Education has announced. Discussions about possible changes in the town's schooling began after a fire badly damaged the intermediate in 2015 and the high school needed extensive repairs. It has now been announced eight classrooms will be relocated from Hāwera Intermediate School in September and October, and further teaching spaces will be added, a statement from the Ministry said. How do F1 drivers pee during race? It is ‘less high tech than you think’, says expert
The Spanish Grand Prix is here, a coming together of the finest drivers in the world behind the wheels of the latest cutting edge road-going technology . The glamour of F1 is huge and the egos enormous, the near-guaranteed Barcelona sun certain to make the entire weekend look like an advert for an expensive package holiday. Behind the glitz and the tans though, the mannequin-like people in high-tech sportswear and designer labels are just that - people. And, like all other people, these people need to go to the loo - including the drivers. F1 races usually last around 90 minutes. For the drivers that means an hour and a half of pure, unbroken concentration. That’s also plenty of time to brew up a calling from nature, but what do they do in such a desperate scenario? How do F1 drivers go to the toilet? Forget the high tech gear in almost every other part of an F1 car - when it comes to going to the toilet, things are a lot more old school. Much like a spitfire … [Read more...] about How do F1 drivers pee during race? It is ‘less high tech than you think’, says expert

Going to college with a “Hope” scholarship
Earlier this year, high school senior Desiree Guzman set her sights on college. A senior at Chicago's Farragut Career Academy High School and enrolled in the school's Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps, Guzman reasoned that a college degree would help her find a better job, one that might help her single mother retire. The only question was how to pay for the tuition. For high school senior Violet Pina, college was a way to escape the violence in her Chicago neighborhood. Her barrier to matriculating was the money needed to finance a degree. Johnson College Prep senior Marion Reed looked to higher education to help her sort out her potential. Her mother and older sister never attended college because pregnancies had delayed their college ambitions, and her older brother had dropped out. But Reed knew that college would be a window into another way, a means of seeing there is more to life than what she experienced in her Chicago home — if only she could afford it. These young … [Read more...] about Going to college with a “Hope” scholarship
Do Apple’s premium AirPods need fixing? I have some ideas
The year is 2024 and Apple is announcing the discontinuation of its AirPods Max over-the-ear headphones. The sentiment around the news is a mix of disappointment and disinterest. On one hand, the critics and consumers all agreed these were wonderful sounding headphones. The ANC and transparency modes were each best in class. The build quality was pristine. People who bought the headphones are extremely disappointed that their products will fade into extinction with no replacements on the horizon. On the other hand, nearly everyone who wanted to buy AirPods Max couldn't afford them, and thus, a quick malaise of indifference fell over the niche product's demise. This future is easy to predict because it's is a close reality of what has already happened to the HomePod, Apple's home Wi-Fi speaker. The HomePod was remarkable when it was first released: It had a compact size, yet songs still boomed with deep richness. Five years after its debut, in June 2017, the HomePod still provides a … [Read more...] about Do Apple’s premium AirPods need fixing? I have some ideas
‘I’m fighting to keep my son’s life support on – he squeezed my hand and I won’t quit’
Looking at my son’s cheeky face as he walked into my bedroom, I knew straight away he was up to something. “Here, Mum, I’ve got you a sweet,” Archie said, smirking. He held up a bag for me to put my hand into but our pet rabbit, Simian, was inside. “Archie!” I said, laughing. “Put the rabbit back before it pees on the carpet.” He left my room and I was still smiling. His pranks and cheeky personality cracked me up all day, every day. From the moment he could walk and talk he was bursting with energy and a naughty sense of humour. At 12, Archie is the baby of the family. I also have Tom, 22, and Lauren, 20, who absolutely adore him. I started taking him to gymnastics when he was just a toddler and he had a natural talent, winning medals aged four. We couldn’t go anywhere without him somersaulting, jumping or doing the splits. He’d jump over posts in shopping centres and back-flip in car parks . My boy’s energy never ran out. It could get him into trouble at school but, … [Read more...] about ‘I’m fighting to keep my son’s life support on – he squeezed my hand and I won’t quit’

Meet the ‘anti-woke’ investor flying the flag for capitalism
Vivek Ramaswamy is a poster boy for the American dream. Born in 1985 to a family of first generation South Indian immigrants, he excelled both in school and outside of it. A nationally ranked junior tennis player, he was also an accomplished pianist who became valedictorian at his Cincinnati high school and went on to study biology at Harvard. Ramaswamy contemplated becoming a doctor before deciding that a career on Wall Street was where he could make the biggest impact in the shortest amount of time. His parents - an engineer at General Electric and a geriatric psychiatrist - were unfamiliar with the financial world. When he first told them that he wanted to work for a hedge fund, they thought he was going into landscape gardening. Now, at the age of 35, Ramaswamy has already made a fortune as a health and technology entrepreneur and is once again carving his own path. Last week he embarked on a new venture, Strive Asset Management , which has earned the backing of high … [Read more...] about Meet the ‘anti-woke’ investor flying the flag for capitalism
