Tiger Woods did not appear to be "aware of how gravely he was injured" after his car crash in California, the first officer on the scene has said. The 45-year-old golf star suffered serious leg injuries when his car hit a kerb and then a tree before rolling several times on the border of Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes in Los Angeles on Tuesday morning. No other cars were involved. Carlos Gonzalez, a deputy from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, told NBC News he arrived within minutes of a 911 call from a member of the public. Asked if Woods was aware of his injuries, the officer said: "He didn't mention anything. I don't think he was aware of how gravely he was injured at the time. "Again, it was very quick - the moment I arrived from the moment he rolled over - so I don't know if he had time to fully assess his injuries." Tiger Woods: Major comeback for golf star this time could be simply returning to a pain-free life
In the depths of his comeback challenge after the triple-pronged collapse of his personal life, his ailing back and his form on the course, Tiger Woods said his central ambition was to lead a pain-free life. As he recovers in hospital, legs shattered by the force of a car crash he was lucky to survive, being pain free will again become his focus. Surgeons who treated 45-year-old Woods say he suffered "comminuted open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula bones". In layman's terms, that means both his shin and calf bones were splintered into multiple pieces and pierced the skin. His foot and ankle are stabilised with a combination of screws and pins and the muscles surrounding the bones were cut to relieve swelling. Advertisement It's safe to say returning to a glittering golfing career will have been relegated below ensuring that he can play with his two children again. Mars Perseverance’s parachute carried secret NASA message
The enormous orange and white parachute deployed by NASA's Perseverance rover to land on Mars contained a secret message, thanks to a puzzle lover on the spacecraft team. Systems engineer Ian Clark used a binary code to spell out "dare mighty things'' — a line from former US President Theodore Roosevelt — in the orange and white strips of the 70-foot (21-meter) parachute. He also included the GPS coordinates for the mission's headquarters at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. This combination of images from video made available by NASA shows steps in the descent of the Mars Perseverance rover as it approaches the surface of the planet Mars rover message encoding was 'super fun' Clark, a crossword hobbyist, came up with the idea two years ago. Engineers wanted an unusual pattern in the nylon fabric to know how the parachute was oriented during descent. Turning it into a secret message was "super fun," he said Tuesday. Only about six people knew … [Read more...] about Mars Perseverance’s parachute carried secret NASA message
The latest unemployment figures should send a chill down Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s spine
Don't max tax THE new unemployment figures should send a chill down Rishi Sunak’s spine. His upcoming Budget could so easily make matters worse. The Chancellor is focused on jobs, and rightly so. But almost every day brings a new leak of a worrying Treasury plan to raise this tax or that. Our views on the madness of hammering working people with extra fuel duty are well known. But hiking corporation tax from the low levels which helped the Tories conjure a job-creation miracle in the last recession is similarly crazy. Unemployment is at a five-year high . Once the furlough ends, the dole queue is likely to lengthen dramatically. Mr Sunak must learn from history. In the decades after World War Two, the US and West Germany encouraged the free market with lower taxes and far less state intervention. Britain maintained high taxes and a big state controlling vast swathes of the economy. America prospered. West Germany rose from its ruins to become … [Read more...] about The latest unemployment figures should send a chill down Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s spine
