SIMPLE eye tests available on the high street could be used to spot dementia YEARS before sufferers experience memory symptoms, new research suggests.Researchers at Moorfields Eye Hospital and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology found a link between poor cognitive ability - a "clear warning sign" of the early stages of Alzheimer's - and the thickness of people's retinal nerves.In a trial of more than 33,000 people, who had tests on memory, reaction time and reasoning, eye scans showed the nerve fibre layer was "significantly thinner" among those who performed badly on cognitive tests.The findings, presented at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference in Toronto, Canada, could be key as doctors believe diagnosing the condition early is "essential".While medics cannot halt dementia, the results of the study have led doctors to believe that intervening before symptoms become too severe provides the best chance to avoid the worst effects of the condition.Healthy living … [Read more...] about Soon high street eye tests could spot the early signs of dementia

STORE chain WH Smith now makes more from its airport, station and motorway services outlets than its High Street shops.Its “travel” branches made £96million in the past year — accounting for 60 per cent of the business.The figures are hardly surprising — this week we found sweets being sold for more than twice the regular price in its branches at transport hubs.The Smiths at Birmingham New Street station was selling packs of Cadbury’s Boost bites for £2.99. A STUDENT pilot killed himself and injured three others in what is thought to be a 'suicide' plane crash.Feras M. Freitekh flew the aircraft into the high street in Hartford, Connecticut on Tuesday, after he was allegedly seen arguing with his flying instructor.According to the Hartford Courant, a source said he had been overly stressed about his poor performance at the flight academy where he was learning to fly.Another revealed the plane had been flying erratically before it crashed and the instructor tried to grab the controls.However the crash happened not far from Pratt and Whitney, a defence contractor which is categorised as "critical infrastructure."The National Transportation Safety Board said it appeared after initial investigations the crash had been deliberate.East Hartford police Lt.
