New York’s ‘Law and Order’ police unit investigated for rape failings

July 1, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

The New York police unit featured in the long-running TV hit ‘Law and Order’ is under investigation for failing victims, with one told she “might want to date” her attacker. Allegations against the Special Victims Division of “shaming”, “abusing” and “re-traumatising” survivors are currently being assessed by the Department of Justice - a move insiders say is the first of Joe Biden’s administration. “The Department received information alleging deficiencies at SVD that have persisted for more than a decade, depriving survivors and the public of the prompt, thorough, and effective investigations needed to protect public safety,” officials said. The revelation follows a letter signed by 19 survivors sent to the Justice Department requesting an investigation into the unit’s methods last year. In the letter, survivors claimed that cases were dealt with by inexperienced and unsympathetic officers who neglected to gather CCTV footage or interview relevant witnesses, according to the … [Read more...] about New York’s ‘Law and Order’ police unit investigated for rape failings

Doctor’s misconduct charge for ‘intimate’ police recruit checks overturned

July 1, 2022 by www.stuff.co.nz

A doctor found guilty of professional misconduct over his probing examinations of police recruits has had all the charges dropped and his name suppressed. The Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal had found parts of the examinations were unnecessary or their purpose was not properly explained to the recruits. It found the doctor guilty of professional misconduct, but imposed no penalty. Now a High Court judge has overturned the misconduct finding and dismissed all the charges. Justice David Gendall said it had not been alleged there was sexualised inappropriate conduct. Top Mob boss reveals how the Mafia survived for so long and why it’ll never be the same again

July 1, 2022 by metro.co.uk

A former Mafia boss has opened up on life in the Mob, why it fell apart and what his experiences can teach young people here in the UK thinking of joining street gangs today. Michael Franzese, 71, was a senior ranking ‘Caporegime’ in the Colombo crime gang which, alongside the Genovese, Gambino, Lucchese and Bonnano families, dominated New York for much of the 20 th century. He notoriously masterminded a huge gasoline tax swindle which netted his crew a staggering $9million each week and he was even portrayed in Martin Scorsese ’s gangster classic ‘Goodfellas’. But when the ‘Prince of the Mafia’ did the unthinkable and renounced the mob in 1995, he became one of the few men to walk away from ‘that life’ and live to tell the tale. As he prepares to embark on a tour across the UK, Franzese sat down with Metro.co.uk to discuss life in the Mafia, what made it so successful, what eventually brought it crashing down and why it will never be the same again. Although … [Read more...] about Top Mob boss reveals how the Mafia survived for so long and why it’ll never be the same again

Hong Kong is a warning to the West of the failure to take China’s menace seriously

July 1, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Twenty-five years ago today, Hong Kong was handed over to China. In his parting speech the last Governor, Chris Patten , promised that “now, Hong Kong people are to run Hong Kong”. That, he added, is the “promise” and the “unshakeable destiny”. Today, that promise lies in tatters. The Chinese Communist Party regime in Beijing has comprehensively breached the international treaty, the Sino-British Joint Declaration, in which it had pledged to protect Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy, fundamental freedoms, human rights and the rule of law under the “one country, two systems” principle. Over the past decade, and with particularly alarming speed and intensity in the past two years since the imposition of the draconian National Security Law, Hong Kong’s freedoms have been dismantled . Almost 800 political prisoners are behind bars, among them former elected legislators, journalists and civil society activists. Many have been in prison for over 18 months without trial.
