Doug Dotson finally makes long-awaited return to Acadiana High

July 6, 2022 by www.theadvocate.com

Doug Dotson finally feels at home again. For the first time since he coached freshman ball in Scott in the early 1990s, Dotson will be coaching on the home side at the stadium named after his father Bill Dotson this fall. The 1987 graduate of Acadiana High is already running the weight room this summer and will be coaching the quarterbacks and special teams for the Wreckin’ Rams in the 2022 season. “Acadiana has always been home to me,” Dotson said. “Some people say it, but I definitely bleed Green and Gold. When you grow up and you’re entrenched and engrained in Acadiana Wreckin’ Ram football, which I grew up on, that doesn’t go away.” Since resigning as Comeaux High’s head coach after seven years leading the Spartans, Dotson commuted to Walker High in Livingston Parish since January of 2021. “That was one of the best jobs I’ve ever had working for (principal) Jason St. Pierre and coach with Chad Mahaffey,” Dotson said. “I can’t say enough good things about the way Jason … [Read more...] about Doug Dotson finally makes long-awaited return to Acadiana High

CPI had already hit a 40-year high when it reached 9% the previous month , according to latest Office for National Statistics (ONS) data. The latest figures mean inflation is almost five times higher than the Bank of England (BoE) target of 2%. BoE economists are expecting UK inflation to hit 11% by the end of this year. It had previously estimated that the rate of CPI would hit 10%. Are you worried about rising prices? Let us know: [email protected] How inflation has changed over the years The ONS said food and drink prices were the biggest contributor of inflation creeping higher in the 12 months to May. Rock wrens on a high

October 25, 2012 by www.stuff.co.nz

Don't let the dimunitive size of the rock wren (pīwauwau) fool you for a second. These tiny creatures are some of our very staunchest native birds, and one of only two remaining members of New Zealand's wren family. Rock wrens, as their name suggests, mostly exist in rocky and craggy areas high above the bushline. The first time I saw them, I was rock-climbing at Sebastopol Bluffs near Mount Cook Village, and as I heaved and struggled my way up the rock, a pair of wrens hopped and flitted around me with ease. Their busy nature, constantly exploring and poking around in their rocky habitat, coupled with their hard-case constant bobbing up and down was a pleasure to watch. Rock wrens are New Zealand's only true alpine birds that live their entire lives above the bushline in sometimes very difficult climactic conditions, where other birds simply wouldn't stand a chance. There were once seven species of wren in New Zealand, and now only the rock wren and its cousin the … [Read more...] about Rock wrens on a high

Recording Scotland’s extreme high-altitude trees

July 6, 2022 by www.bbc.co.uk

By Steven McKenzie Published 17 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Scotland's hilltops were once a landscape full of woodlands but tree cover disappeared over thousands of years due to human activity. Now researcher Sarah Watts is among those collecting information on where trees are taking root as part of her work on mountain woodland restoration. "When we are talking about altitudes above 900m that is very, very extreme for a tree to grow," she says. But she says trees have been found at heights of more than 1,000m (3,281ft) on some of Scotland's highest peaks. The trees reach the mountains as seeds - often blown on winds or deposited in bird droppings after being eaten. "It's a natural process," says Ms Watts - a PhD researcher based in the Highlands with the University of Stirling's Global Change Ecology research group. "Native trees … [Read more...] about Recording Scotland’s extreme high-altitude trees

The World Is a Thriving Slaughterhouse

September 13, 2016 by www.theatlantic.com

H ere, lying in a stained carton, are notes on a refugee camp in Tanzania, where surviving Tutsis and their Hutu enemies lived side by side in blue tarp tents. It is 1994. The notes record that there are people everywhere, milling and moving in short parades on the main path in the camp, hastily constructed by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Women wear colorful cloths, khangas , and carry yellow plastic containers of water on their heads. Children and old men push up against one another, as if at a bargain sale. They hold portable radios to their ears. A man in a brown rain hat drags a reluctant goat by a rope. White smoke mixes with the smells of fresh earth and excrement. At an outdoor butcher shop, a cow’s bloodied horn lies beside the animal’s astonished head. I greet a group of young Hutus in French. “Did you participate in the killings?,” I ask. “We did nothing,” one says. “Did you see others do the killing?” He says, “We saw nothing.” I ask, “How many … [Read more...] about The World Is a Thriving Slaughterhouse

We’ve Never Seen Mars Quite Like This

July 6, 2022 by www.theatlantic.com

When Corrine Rojas comes into work, Mars is waiting for her. She drives to the office, grabs a cup of coffee, and then pulls up the latest dispatches from Perseverance, a car-size NASA rover situated inside a crater in Mars’s northern hemisphere. Rojas, an operations engineer at Arizona State University, checks that the rover’s main cameras are working well, and that they took the shots scientists back home had asked for. Then, she basks in the wondrous sights of our celestial neighbor. “I am often the first person to lay eyes on photos from Mars taken by the rover,” Rojas told me. And Mars has been looking particularly good lately. That’s not to say that the planet has been working on its appearance; aside from the winds blowing around some dust, it has remained mostly unchanged for a few billion years . The difference is us, and particularly the Perseverance mission, which has captured some of the sharpest views of the Martian surface to date. The rover’s job is to search for … [Read more...] about We’ve Never Seen Mars Quite Like This

Duke of Kent Prince Edward visited the UK's largest display of Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s historic lifeboats at Chatham historic dockyard, 26 years after opening the original collection in 1996. The Buckingham Palace shared photos of the Duke’s visit on its official Twitter handle on Wednesday. The Duke has been the RNLI's President for over half a century. During the visit, he was shown three of the charity's most significant lifeboats, which between them have saved more than 300 lives at sea. The Duke presented Tina Smith, the RNLI Historic Lifeboat Collection Volunteer and former lifeboat crew, with a 20-year Service Award for operational service at Gravesend Lifeboat Station. “His Royal Highness met volunteers and staff at @HistoricRNLI before presenting a certificate to commemorate his visit during The Queen’s #PlatinumJubilee year,” according to the tweet. … [Read more...] about Prince Edward visits UK’s largest display of RNLI historic lifeboats
