South Korea’s new space program reaches for the stars
The recent launch of South Korea's first domestically developed rocket has given new impetus to the nation's ambitions to develop novel technologies to explore and exploit outer space. This week, the government announced that it intends to invest 800 billion South Korean won (€587 million) to develop Goheung, an island in the country's south that serves as the headquarters of the Naro Space Center. The 200-ton Nuri rocket was launched from the center on June 21. The Ministry of Science, Information and Communication Technology confirmed that the first- and second-stage rockets both separated on schedule, and that a number of satellites were deployed at the target altitude of 700 kilometers (430 miles). Kauri are some of New Zealand’s most important taonga – both ecologically and culturally. But the trees are being killed by incurable kauri dieback disease – caused by a pathogen called Phytophthora agathidicida – and the fight to save them has been slow and convoluted. In the fight to protect kauri, Aucklanders have opened their wallets to help, with ratepayers funding $107 million over 10 years through a natural environment targeted rate . THOUSANDS of flight cancellations and delays have caused frustrating chaos for millions of Americans hoping to travel over the holiday weekend. As of Sunday evening, over 933 flights have been canceled and at least 8,498 flights have been delayed due to bad weather as well as staffing shortages, per FlightAware . The July 4th weekend chaos has been worsened by Tropical Storm Bonnie and Tropical Storm Colin. Tropical Storm Colin put storm warnings in effect for much of the coastal Carolinas this weekend and is said to affect Fourth of July gatherings with heavy rainfall. Colin originated near Florida's east coast on Saturday then traveled towards Georgia before moving inland over South Carolina.
