Younger would-be homeowners face challenges when trying to secure a foothold on the property ladder and the older generation are finding it difficult to downsize because of the housing crisis.Rising construction costs and the impact of construction on the environment are also concerns for many. In a country that nearly always believes bigger is better -- think supersize fries, giant cars and 10-gallon hats -- more and more Americans are downsizing their living quarters. Welcome to the world of tiny homes, most of them less than 400 square feet (less than 40 square meters), which savvy buyers are snapping up for their minimalist appeal and much smaller carbon footprints. The tiny homes revolution, which includes those on foundations and those on wheels, began a few decades ago, but the financial crisis of 2008 and the coming-of-age of millennials gave it a new impetus. The proliferation of home improvement shows on networks like HGTV fueled the trend, inspiring customers ready to personalize their own small living spaces. Cost is one of the driving factors -- a tiny home of just over 200 square feet with a customized interior can go for about $50,000 -- a massive savings over a McMansion in the suburbs. Groningen will soon have a little tiny-house neighborhood at Westpark. The first of the up to 30 tiny, energy-neutral and sustainable houses are expected to be built by the end of the year, Dagblad van het Noorden reports. The municipality designated a small neighborhood for the tiny houses. Between 15 and 30 homes will be built there. The tiny houses will be allowed to stand in the neighborhood for 10 years, after which they and their residents will have to move. The plots on which the tiny houses will be built are 400 square meters large, with a building area of 100 square meters. The maximum floor space for the houses will be 50 square meters. The plot area outside the buildings will be public and intended for collective facilities. The municipality is also working on plans for a tiny house neighborhood in Meerstad, on the east side of the city. For this area, the municipality is thinking of more luxurious tiny houses. But these plans are still far from done and construction … [Read more...] about Groningen to get a tiny house neighborhood
Tommy Birch Des Moines Register Published 9:23 AM EDT Apr 21, 2019 Trevor Clifton pulls out his key, gets on the back of a trailer and walks across the metal platform to a door. That door marks the start of about 104 square feet of wooden housing. The habitat is barely big enough for a bed and a couch and doesn't have any plumbing or even a shower. But none of that bothers Clifton. This is home for the Iowa Cubs pitcher. It’s an unusual route for any professional athlete. Most minor league players in Triple-A live in apartments or out of hotels. But not Clifton, a right-handed starting pitcher for Iowa. Instead, Clifton, named the Chicago Cubs’ top minor league pitcher in 2016, has decided to go another route. During the off-season, he and his dad Dennis built the tiny home. “We built it from the ground up,” Clifton said. “We always saw the tiny homes on Pinterest and all that (and thought) ‘dang, … [Read more...] about Chicago Cubs prospect is living in a tiny house he built with his dad
