Smartphone batteries could last for up to five years with the imminent development of new technology , scientists have said. Lithium-ion batteries, which most devices currently use, are notorious for degrading over time – which is why a new smartphone will last longer on a single charge than an old one. This is because the graphic anodes (the negative terminal in batteries) that they use require a binder to keep it from falling apart when passing a charge between the electrolyte (the medium by which charge is passed) and the cathode (the positive terminal). The most common binder is poly(vinylidene fluoride), or PVDF, but researchers from Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology suggest that a new binder - made from a bis-imino-acenaphthenequinone-paraphenylene (BP) copolymer – will be more effective. Despite the difficult scientific name, the differences between a BP copolymer and the PVDF one are surprisingly simple: the BP binder has better mechanical … [Read more...] about New smartphone batteries could last for five years without breaking down

Robert Crimo’s last Discord post was politician’s live TV suicide
The man whom authorities say is a person of interest in connection with the July Fourth parade shooting in Highland Park, Illinois, posted to his Discord channel in March a photo of a politician who fatally shot himself on live TV. The photo was the last posting Robert Crimo, 22, made before going silent for months on the platform. Monday's shooting left six people dead and more than 30 others injured. Since police announced that Crimo is a person of interest, several disturbing posts he allegedly made on various social media platforms have emerged. On his Discord server, Crimo would allegedly post nihilistic political memes, including one featuring a picture of R. Budd Dwyer, Pennsylvania's state treasurer, who fatally shot himself during a 1987 press conference, according to NBC News. Boris Johnson under pressure – who are the frontrunners for his job if PM’s time runs out?
The resignation of Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid could be the final blow for Boris Johnson's premiership after the political heavyweights attacked the PM's "lack of integrity", competence and leadership. The prime minister narrowly survived a confidence vote in him last month. Tory MPs voted by 211 to 148 in support of the PM, but the scale of the revolt against his leadership left him wounded. When Theresa May faced a confidence vote in 2018 she secured the support of 63% of her MPs - but was still forced out within six months. The prime minister saw 41% of his MPs vote against him, a worse result than Mrs May. Advertisement So, if Mr Johnson faces a similar fate, these are the candidates that could stand to replace him: Up until the last few months, the former chancellor was seen by many Conservative MPs as the frontrunner in the race to succeed Mr Johnson. Doctors’ #1 Source for Healthcare Information: Wikipedia
In spite of all of our teachers' and bosses' warnings that it's not a trustworthy source of information, we all rely on Wikipedia. Not only when we can’t remember the name of that guy from that movie, which is a fairly low-risk use, but also when we find a weird rash or are just feeling a little off and we’re not sure why. One in three Americans have tried to diagnose a medical condition with the help of the Internet, and a new report says doctors are just as drawn to Wikipedia’s flickering flame. According to the IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics’ “ Engaging patients through social media ” report, Wikipedia is the top source of healthcare information for both doctors and patients. Fifty percent of physicians use Wikipedia for information, especially for specific conditions. Generally, more people turn to Wikipedia for rare diseases than common conditions. The top five conditions looked up on the site over the past year were: tuberculosis, Crohn’s disease, pneumonia, … [Read more...] about Doctors’ #1 Source for Healthcare Information: Wikipedia

Federal judge whose son was killed in ambush: “My son’s death cannot be in vain”
[This story originally aired on February 20.] In July 2020, Daniel Anderl, the son of federal Judge Esther Salas and attorney Mark Anderl, was shot dead by a gunman at the front door of the family's New Jersey home. Daniel Anderl, 20, took a bullet to his chest trying to protect his parents. By the time Judge Salas came to the door, the killer was gone. Her husband, Mark, was wounded. "I have direct evidence that he died heroically, that he had a holy death," says David Oakley, Daniel Anderl's godfather and a family friend. The stranger who came to Judge Salas' door had been holding a package, posing as a deliveryman. Just eight days earlier, a chillingly similar incident took place in California. When attorney Marc Angelucci came to his door to sign for a package, he was also shot dead. "He was just a down-to-earth, at the center of his soul a good-hearted person," Marc's friend, Cassie Jaye, tells CBS News correspondent Tracy Smith. "[Sighs] I was trying to make … [Read more...] about Federal judge whose son was killed in ambush: “My son’s death cannot be in vain”

Civilians: Our Next Problem
By R.W.GORDON THE movie at Camp Dehabilitation was packed, largely because the commanding officer had caused mess call to be sounded early and unit commanders had marched the resulting formations over in a body. The strays herded late into the front seats were those the MP’s had rounded up at the slop chute and Post Exchange. A captain, with enough ribbons on his chest to stifle incipient jeers, strode from the wings to the exact center of the stage, where he was handed a microphone by a corporal with a crew haircut. He said words into this microphone, to wit: — “The movie tonight, men, will be Hollywood Canteen. I know most of you have seen this picture, and that all of you except the adolescent autograph hounds are going to gag on a second dose of it, which is why we brought you over here before chow. You will consider this picture a training film, and will pay strict attention. Company officers will hold school in this subject upon your return to barracks. “We’ve got to … [Read more...] about Civilians: Our Next Problem
