With the Tories in turmoil, steel helps Boris Johnson show his mettle

July 3, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Boris Johnson’s move to extend tariffs on imported steel by two years — a probable breach of World Trade Organisation rules — was welcomed by protectionist MPs from both sides of the political aisle. Industry also predictably lauded the decision, saying it will be protected from artificially cheap imports. Much like fishing, steel carries with it a disproportionate amount of political focus compared to its size — in 2020 the £2bn it contributed to the economy was the equivalent of just 0.1pc of total economic output and 1.2pc of manufacturing. But as the industry likes to point out: everything is made of steel. The metal goes into cars, aircraft, new buildings and the machinery that forms almost everything else. Without it, steel insiders say the logic of having a manufacturing industry in the UK would be considerably weaker — a fact that will not be lost on the Prime Minister. The move was pegged as an effort to “protect the steel sector”, Trade Secretary Anne-Marie … [Read more...] about With the Tories in turmoil, steel helps Boris Johnson show his mettle

Prisoners being trained up as football referees to help stop cons re-offending

July 2, 2022 by www.dailystar.co.uk

Prisoners are being trained up as football referees with eleven cons passing the FA’s Level 7 course in the past year, which allows them to take charge in junior amateur leagues, with Level 1 officials in control of Premier League games. A report by inspectors from the Independent Monitoring Board revealed details of the course in a new report. The scheme, which normally costs £135, states that it equips participants with the "skills and knowledge" to referee. The lags must complete five modules, including watching videos of matches, and learn the rules of the beautiful game. The criminals, at HMP Highpoint, a 1,300-capacity jail in Suffolk, also discovered how to “built a rapport” with players and coaches. READ MORE: Premier League to non-league - 11 football stars who dropped down the divisions The IMB report stated that five courses were funded via the dynamic purchasing system, an “online procurement system”, allowing governors to commission small educational … [Read more...] about Prisoners being trained up as football referees to help stop cons re-offending

Grenfell, five years on: ‘We know who the guilty are but they remain free’

June 14, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

The pain is still raw; the anger undiminished. Marlene Anderson breaks down in tears as she remembers watching Grenfell Tower burning, the white ash floating out of the sky and landing on her hair and clothes, while inside the building her father – although she wouldn’t officially know it for another two months – had perished in the blaze. Ray ‘Moses’ Bernard, an electrician, who had worked in the House of Lords and at Buckingham Palace, died of suffocation and cyanide poisoning killed by the acrid smoke. By the time his body was recovered, “his remains were no more than 30 per cent of who he was”. Moses, as everybody knew him, was found on the floor next to his bed, his dog, Marley, close by. On the bed were other victims who had sought refuge in the top floor flat as they tried to escape the flames. Among them was Jessica Urbano Ramirez, a 12-year-old girl, who had spent 55 minutes on the phone to 999 emergency operators begging to be rescued, and 12-year-old Biruk Haftom, whose … [Read more...] about Grenfell, five years on: ‘We know who the guilty are but they remain free’

Letters: Make cyclists have insurance and number plates, and ban headphones

June 28, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

SIR – Although it may be theoretical at present, I would be interested to know what an insurance premium for a cyclist might be under the system proposed (Tim Franey, Letters, June 27) . I find myself sceptical of both drivers’ and cyclists’ groups as they argue about who is at fault for various conflicts. I could, however, trust an actuarial calculation of risk, expressed as the cold, hard cost for insuring a cyclist. A comparison of the annual average premiums might prove illuminating. Adam Herrick SIR – Many cyclists are fully insured, my own annual premium being almost as much as my car insurance. I would also gladly display a bicycle licence plate were it the law, but how would such legislation be enforced – and how would it reach the children and young adults who use bikes for fun and exercise but often cause mayhem on footpaths as well as local roads? Rosie Harden-Vane SIR – Tim Franey writes to suggest that cycles should carry number plates. But what … [Read more...] about Letters: Make cyclists have insurance and number plates, and ban headphones

Census 2021: Can Richmondshire’s population drain be reversed?

July 2, 2022 by www.bbc.co.uk

By Andrew Barton & Tom Airey Published 1 day ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire may be as picturesque as they come, but it also has one of the most rapidly declining populations in the UK, according to the latest government census. So why are people deserting the district and what is being done to address the problem? BBC News spoke to people in the sprawling and historic Yorkshire Dales idyll to find out. "I don't think people can afford to live in Richmond itself. It has gone up considerably in the last three or four years," says 57-year-old Sarah Uludole. Stopping for a moment on a side street off Richmond's bustling cobbled Market Place, Mrs Uludole pinpoints that rising house prices are one of the biggest issues facing people who are wanting to stay in Richmondshire - and especially in Richmond itself. … [Read more...] about Census 2021: Can Richmondshire’s population drain be reversed?

Parents dipping into children’s savings to pay soaring bills, poll finds

July 3, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

Parents have resorted to dipping into their children ’s savings to afford to pay for the soaring cost of household bills , a poll has found. According to a survey for The Telegraph , Britons are lifting £8.5m a day from their children as the sprialling rate of inflation - which recently hit a 40-year high - continues to top up already sky-high domestic costs. The poll revealed that families had withdrawn almost £300 on average from their children’s savings so far this year. It found a third of the 2,000 people questioned had raided their children’s funds this year and suggested a total of £1.4bn has been withdrawn so far. Almost a quarter said they had extracted the funds to pay for increasingly expensive food shops, one in four said they had done so to help pay for exorbitant energy bills, while 6 per cent said they used their children’s savings to pay for travel. More than a quarter said they had either reduced the amount they were keeping aside for … [Read more...] about Parents dipping into children’s savings to pay soaring bills, poll finds
