Soaring fuel bills add to ‘dire’ cost pressures facing NHS
Hospitals across Britain face rises in power bills running into millions of pounds as the spiralling cost of living crisis hits NHS trusts. As household fuel bills climb to unprecedented levels, the health service also faces soaring charges as a result of the escalating cost pressures. A survey of NHS trusts across England and Scotland shows they are facing rises of up to £29 million in the three financial years to date. Sharp rises in energy costs caused by factors including the end of the pandemic and the war in Ukraine are also hitting the NHS, figures obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests by Metro.co.uk show. In Nottingham, costs for gas, electricity and oil combined rose from £8.8 million in 2020 and 2021 to £15.8 the following year. The budget, and therefore forecast, for the current financial year is £37.9 million. At St George’s Trust in London , which runs one of the largest hospitals in the UK, the bill for gas and electricity is due … [Read more...] about Soaring fuel bills add to ‘dire’ cost pressures facing NHS
Tuesday morning news briefing: General says UK must be ready for war
The head of the Army today says the UK must be ready for war with Russia. Four months on from Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine, General Sir Patrick Sanders is set to compare the assault to the rise of Nazi Germany . He will say that Britain is facing its "1937 moment" and must be ready to "fight and win" to ward off the threat from Russia. In his first public speech as Chief of the General Staff , Sir Patrick will say the UK must be prepared to "act rapidly" to contain Russian expansionism. Nato last night pledged to massively increase its forces available on high alert to more than 300,000 troops, a more-than seven-fold increase. Sir Patrick's intervention is likely to put pressure on Mr Johnson to maintain the size of the Armed Forces after plans were announced to reduce troop numbers in a move to a more modern military. Defence editor Danielle Sheridan reports that, in a separate speech today, Ben Wallace, the Defence Secretary, is to call for increased … [Read more...] about Tuesday morning news briefing: General says UK must be ready for war
With the Tories in turmoil, steel helps Boris Johnson show his mettle
Boris Johnson’s move to extend tariffs on imported steel by two years — a probable breach of World Trade Organisation rules — was welcomed by protectionist MPs from both sides of the political aisle. Industry also predictably lauded the decision, saying it will be protected from artificially cheap imports. Much like fishing, steel carries with it a disproportionate amount of political focus compared to its size — in 2020 the £2bn it contributed to the economy was the equivalent of just 0.1pc of total economic output and 1.2pc of manufacturing. But as the industry likes to point out: everything is made of steel. The metal goes into cars, aircraft, new buildings and the machinery that forms almost everything else. Without it, steel insiders say the logic of having a manufacturing industry in the UK would be considerably weaker — a fact that will not be lost on the Prime Minister. The move was pegged as an effort to “protect the steel sector”, Trade Secretary Anne-Marie … [Read more...] about With the Tories in turmoil, steel helps Boris Johnson show his mettle
Your energy bills could soar EVEN higher to cover costs of collapsed Bulb Energy
Energy bills could soar even higher as customers face forking out to run collapsed firm Bulb. Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng admitted he did not know if the £1bn-a-year cost would fall on a buyer for the firm, the Treasury, or all customers’ bills. Raising bills to cover the costs of propping up Bulb Energy, which failed in November, would be another blow to Brits as bills hit £2,800 a year this winter. But in a glimmer of hope, Mr Kwarteng also suggested electricity bills could be cut in future, by no longer pegging them to the price of gas. He said: “It cannot be the case forever that we can link directly our electricity prices to gas prices when gas is only a portion of the electricity generating mix.” Annual electricity and gas bills are already expected to hit £2,800 a year from October as the price cap is raised. Alongside this, the £2.7bn cost of 28 suppliers collapsing will be spread across customers' bills nationwide - adding about £94 per home. A deadline … [Read more...] about Your energy bills could soar EVEN higher to cover costs of collapsed Bulb Energy

Prisoners being trained up as football referees to help stop cons re-offending
Prisoners are being trained up as football referees with eleven cons passing the FA’s Level 7 course in the past year, which allows them to take charge in junior amateur leagues, with Level 1 officials in control of Premier League games. A report by inspectors from the Independent Monitoring Board revealed details of the course in a new report. The scheme, which normally costs £135, states that it equips participants with the "skills and knowledge" to referee. The lags must complete five modules, including watching videos of matches, and learn the rules of the beautiful game. The criminals, at HMP Highpoint, a 1,300-capacity jail in Suffolk, also discovered how to “built a rapport” with players and coaches. Boys-only pointe class helps teens embrace challenging gender norms
Girls are who most would think of when asked about ballet – from the movements to the pink shoes. These societal expectations can alienate boys who want to try sports and activities typically associated with girls. Creating a space for only boys to practise is one way to make dancers feel more comfortable and able to participate without judgement. With this in mind, a ballet school has opened an all-boys class for pointe work, welcoming in young male dancers. Award-winning dance teacher Natalie Pearl is hoping to change who pointe is accessible to, after realising that boys were reluctant to join in a female-dominated dance discipline. Her First Position School of Dance in Bournemouth, Dorset, has seen the confidence of boys grow – and the class has gone from having five participants to 50. Natalie, 46, said: ‘There is still a real stereotype about ballet being girly and I wanted to encourage more boys to do it. ‘It used to be four or five boys but I now have … [Read more...] about Boys-only pointe class helps teens embrace challenging gender norms
