Every house in UK to receive £400 grant to help with rising energy bills
A grant of £400 will help struggling households cope with the energy bills crisis. Previously, a £200 loan in place for UK families was expected to be paid back. Rishi Sunak announced today this would no longer be the case, and increased its sum to £400. All households with a domestic electricity connection will be automatically eligible for the grant. Mr Sunak said: ‘The outlook for energy prices has changed. I’ve decided those repayments will be cancelled. So, for the avoidance of doubt, this support is now unambiguously a grant. ‘Furthermore, we have decided that the £200 of support for household energy bills will be doubled to £400 for everyone.’ He told the Commons: ‘We are on the side of hard working families with £6 billion of financial support.’ The grant comes in the form of a council tax rebate to households. ‘Our home has been invaded by huge swarm of disgusting flies – and no one will help’
A couple say their home of more than four decades has been invaded by flies , and the problem is so bad the critter fly into their mouths when they're eating. Angela Hickey, 68, and John Hickey, 79, claim the property they have lived in for 43 years has now been taken over by thousands of drain flies. And the couple , from Stanmore, Middlesex, allege that their housing association has not dealt with the problem satisfactorily. The pair were moved into a hotel after the association said they would fumigate the property and pull the kitchen out to assess the source of the problem. But, when they returned home, Angela and John claim they found minimal work had been done - and the flies were still in the property. And, nearly 18 months since they first noticed the flies, they are still trying to get rid of them. Home Group Housing Association said its team had "gone over and above to try to resolve the issue". But Angela claimed: “It’s got to the stage where we were … [Read more...] about ‘Our home has been invaded by huge swarm of disgusting flies – and no one will help’

Cost of living: Chancellor’s aid will help you and make things worse at the same time
Let's begin with perhaps the most important question: will this make a difference? The short answer is yes. The stimulus the chancellor announced today is big - very big. It will affect all households and some - especially those on lower incomes, benefits and many pensioners - will get outsized one-off cash payments. For the "average" household, such as it is, the fact that the energy bill rebate has been doubled will mean bills are no longer in totally unprecedented territory; instead they are only likely to hit the highest level since the early 1980s. In short, this package will not prevent the coming year from feeling painful; however, it will certainly mean it is less painful in the short run than it would otherwise have been. And the fact that a lot of this money is dedicated to lower income households who are hardest hit by the cost of living crisis is especially important. For one of the iniquities of inflation is that it is a very regressive economic … [Read more...] about Cost of living: Chancellor’s aid will help you and make things worse at the same time
