Something happened last week that made me rather sad. The 600-year-old Bretton Oak, near Peterborough, one of the last survivors of Grimeshaw Woods, an ancient forest that once covered much of that part of the world, was felled after final desperate attempts to save it failed. This ancient tree, which had stood since the reign of Henry VI, was ripped apart by men with hi-vis jackets and chainsaws in a matter of minutes, to the horror of many locals. Its crime? The roots were allegedly causing ‘structural damage’ to nearby housing. Although, as one resident pointed out, that case was debatable. No matter. Insurance companies were refusing to underwrite the affected properties, and so the man from the council decreed that the oak had to go. Six centuries of history, a living organism that had outlasted kings, queens, plagues, war and famine, felled by petty bureaucracy. The Bretton Oak had stood since the reign of Henry VI Oh, it’s just an old tree, I hear you say. And … [Read more...] about SARAH VINE: Why felling old trees is an arrogant assault on history

Puppies abandoned in car left unattended for 24 hours
Two 10-week-old Labrador crosses have been rescued from a car they’d been left in for at least a day. The poor pups were spotted in a supermarket car park in Surrey, and concerns were raised that they’d been stuck in a state inside the vehicle for far too long. RSPCA animal rescue officer, Chloe Wilson, who is now looking into the incident, said: ‘People were concerned about the puppies who’d been shut inside the car which had been left unattended for some time. ‘Witnesses say the car had been there since the previous day, so we believe they may have been inside for at least 24 hours. ‘Local vets were able to attend and get the puppies out via a partially open window and took them to their clinic to check them over. ‘An owner made contact with the vets and claimed they were their dogs but never attended to collect them. We’ve been trying to make contact ever since and have had no luck; the car is still in the car park. ‘It’s a very bizarre situation, and we’ve now … [Read more...] about Puppies abandoned in car left unattended for 24 hours
Vetting of airport staff fast-tracked to ease travel chaos
Security checks on aviation staff will be fast tracked in an attempt to cut delays at Britain's airports. The Department for Transport said it was speeding up the vetting process for new staff to help tackle the travel chaos that has plagued travellers for months. Holidaymakers faced more disruption on Saturday, with thousands of passengers at Heathrow hit by delays caused by a computer failure that left planes unable to refuel and "horrendous" scenes at the baggage reclaim area. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said that by speeding up the vetting of new aviation security staff, the Government was "doing its bit to help deliver for passengers". Counter terrorism checks on staff, which previously took up to 20 days, are now being done in half the time, he said. New staff are also carrying out other training while their security checks are ongoing. Airlines are expected to announce a series of cancellations to summer flights next week aimed at minimising disruption in the … [Read more...] about Vetting of airport staff fast-tracked to ease travel chaos
