SINGLE mum-of-two Gina Hackett is one of millions of people who can slash their broadband bill and save hundreds of pounds. Like millions of people across the UK, Gina is eligible for a so-called social broadband tariff. These are cheaper broadband and phone deals offered by some providers to people on certain benefits . But most people don't realise these deals are available - it's estimated that just 55,000 of the 4.2million people who qualify are making use of the saving. Sun Money is calling on the Government, regulator Ofcom and suppliers to do more to support struggling customers and make it easier for customers to switch to a social tariff . The Sun is calling on more firms to offer deals — and to make them available to customers online. Furious Martin Lewis didn’t hold back this morning as he slammed ‘zombie’ Tories for sleepwalking on the energy bill crisis – warning a ‘national crisis on the scale of the pandemic’ could be coming. The top money expert fumed ‘what a load of bull’ in response to the idea that leaders can’t specify how they will help struggling Brits until a new prime minister is in place. Once again, he cautioned civil unrest could be looming if something is not immediately done. It follows a dire prediction that an annual energy bill is likely to hit £4,266 for the average household in the UK. In an interview on GMB this morning, Mr Lewis likened the situation to a natural disaster. ‘Thankfully we don’t have volcanos in this country, but if we did and it erupted, I would be surprised if the government said they couldn’t call a Cobra meeting. ‘A volcano erupting is an emergency that risks lives, this is a financial emergency that risks lives’. Mr Lewis’s anger was palpable … [Read more...] about Martin Lewis explodes ‘what a load of bull’ in rant at Tories over energy bills
A leading supporter of Rishi Sunak has claimed that Liz Truss’s plan for a tax-cutting emergency Budget would do “nothing at all” to help pensioners through the worsening cost of living crisis. Mark Harper, a former Tory chief whip, said the Foreign Secretary’s focus on immediately cutting taxes would help high earners while doing little to improve the situation for retired people or those on low wages. The two Tory leadership candidates have faced calls to sit down with Boris Johnson to agree a plan to deal with rising prices and spiking energy bills before Sep 5 ,when the winner of the Tory contest will be announced and take office. But both Ms Truss and Rishi Sunak have ruled out doing so, and Mr Harper said the candidates could not work together on a plan because they have a “big difference of opinion” on how to approach the situation. The comments came after Mr Sunak announced that he would be prepared to take action and roll out extra help for families this … [Read more...] about Liz Truss’s tax cuts ‘will do nothing to help pensioners’

JULY, 1927 BY ERNEST HEMINGWAY I ‘How are you going yourself, Jack?’ I asked him. ‘You seen this Walcott?’ he says. ‘Just in the gym.’ ‘Well,’ Jack says, ‘I ’m going to need a lot of luck with that boy.’ ‘ He can’t hit you, Jack,’ Soldier said. ‘I wish to hell he could n’t.’ “He could n’t hit you with a handful of birdshot.’ ‘Birdshot’d be all right,’Jack says. “I would n’t mind birdshot any.’ ‘He looks easy to hit,’ I said. ‘Sure,’ Jack says, “he ain’t going to last long. He ain’t going to last like you and me, Jerry. But right, now he’s got everything.’ ‘You’ll left-hand him to death,’ ‘Maybe,’Jack says. ‘Sure. I got a chance to.’ ‘Handle him like you handled Kid Lewis.’ ‘Kid Lewis,’ Jack said. ‘That kike!’ The three of us, Jack Brennan, Soldier Bartlett, and I, were in Handley’s. There were a couple of broads sitting at the next table to us. They had been drinking. ‘What do you mean, kike?’ one of the broads says. ‘What do you mean, kike, you … [Read more...] about Fifty Grand
It strikes me, as I’m sitting down to dinner one evening with Jack Zajac and we survey this terrific rock cod his wife, Corda, has stuffed and baked, that the whole answer to the problem of trying to live off the land is not to. Enough of the modern impulse to restore economic balance through backyard farming. The evidence is in. There is a clear and simple reason why the feedlot and the supermarket thrive. I tried raising beef. It took a year and a half and it cost me twice as much for the same meat I could buy at the Safeway (give or take a few saturated fats). I tried raising pigs, and while it was quicker than steers, and because I fed them on restaurant leftovers seemed cheaper, I spent half my life making deals with indifferent chefs and sullen dishwashers. After I’d hauled the seventy-fifth pail of soggy paper, broken crockery, and sour garbage home to the ripest halfacre in Santa Cruz County, I began to realize that my time is worth something. And the list goes on. Fresh … [Read more...] about Wynken, Blynken, and Cod

The regulator said the change would go “some way to provide the stability needed in the energy market”, adding: “It is not in anyone’s interests for more suppliers to fail and exit the market.” It said Russia’s actions in Ukraine had led to volatility in the global energy market experienced last winter lasting “much longer, with much higher prices for both gas and electricity than ever before”. As expected, Ofgem warned that as a result of the market conditions, the price cap would have to increase later this month to reflect increased costs. However it said that the changes would mean that any fall in wholesale prices would be … [Read more...] about Ofgem: Energy price cap to be updated quarterly ahead of ‘challenging winter’
Washington — The Justice Department on Wednesday announced charges against three dozen people who are accused of orchestrating health care fraud schemes across the country, with laboratory owners and company executives among those accused of ordering unnecessary or fraudulent medical tests and equipment worth $1.2 billion. The defendants are accused of using telemedicine to obtain orders for the unneeded medical tests, which were then allegedly billed to Medicare and other insurance companies, the Justice Department said. According to court documents, the tests and equipment were frequently ordered without any interaction with patients and yielded little valuable information for the patients or their primary care doctors. In many of the prosecutions, the owners and operators of medical laboratories are accused of paying illegal kickbacks and even bribes to telemedicine companies, medical professionals, and medical equipment companies in exchange for patient referrals to boost … [Read more...] about Feds charge 36 in alleged health care fraud schemes totaling $1.2 billion
WHETHER you live your life according to the stars, or not, very few people (if any) are unsure about what their star sign is - which refers to your sign of the zodiac according to the sun. But just as there's the day, there's also night, meaning, we each have a moon sign, too - but what does this actually mean? What is a moon sign? Your star sign is determined by the sun's position at the time you were born, which is said to dictate your personality. Your moon sign, however, represents your emotions and inner mood, and according to astrologers, the two go hand-in-hand. This is especially true for women, according to Lunarium, since the Moon in astrology is the patroness of women.
