Nearly half of Brits enjoy shopping for brand new clothing – but the post-shopping high fades after just four wears of a new garment, a study has found. A poll of 2,000 adults found that Brits will purchase new clothes five times a month on average, typically spending £70 a month on updating their wardrobe – although a fifth will spend £100 or more. And 47% say they enjoy buying new clothing items – but the post-shopping glow quickly turns to guilt for 56% of shoppers. More than one in five (22%) admit the excitement of the item's “newness” is fleeting, while 17% start to develop doubts over whether they actually like their purchase once their shopping high subsides. And as the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite, three-quarters look for bigger savings when shopping for clothes. Garments needn’t be brand new for cash-strapped Brits to get their retail therapy glow, though – as more than half believe it just needs to be new to them. Three-quarters of Brits are looking … [Read more...] about Thrill of buying a new item of clothing fades after just four wears, study finds

‘It’s a once-in-a-lifetime find and was covered in crust’: An afternoon with Britain’s mudlarkers
“Help, it’s a big one.” I turn around quickly, hopeful for treasure, to see mudlarker Monika Buttling-Smith wrestling with a leech on her arm. She pulls it off in good humour and tosses it back into the still, cool water of the River Stour, in north-east Essex. For a second, I experience the surge of excitement that brings mudlarkers back to the foreshore and murky depths of UK streams, rivers and coastlines time and again. Mudlarking , the alluring practice – to some – of hunting through river mud for lost items of value or historical significance, has been around since the late eighteenth century. But the activity - now more of a hobby than a desperate way to earn money - is enjoying a boom in the current drought, as the lack of rain dries the land and causes the water levels of some non-tidal rivers to recede. This has been the driest eight-month spell since 1976 . A drought was declared across half of England on Friday and the source of the Thames has dried up to more … [Read more...] about ‘It’s a once-in-a-lifetime find and was covered in crust’: An afternoon with Britain’s mudlarkers

‘Pigeon poo’ pickpockets descend on tourists in Bruges
Pickpockets are targeting tourists in Bruges by spraying them with fake pigeon poo before stealing their valuables while helping them clean their jackets. Police in the Belgian tourist hotspot have issued a warning to travellers to be aware of the ruse after reports of at least two incidents of the scam. The thieves spray a white liquid on an unsuspecting victim in the packed crowds of visitors before pointing out the mess and offering to help clean it. They take advantage of their target scanning the skies for the airborne supposed culprits to rifle through pockets after pointing out the mess on the clothes. Amid fears the tactic is widespread but largely unreported, officers called on victims to report any similar incidents in the picturesque city, which is nicknamed the Venice of the North because of its beautiful canals. "If you notice what looks like pigeon droppings on your clothes, or if someone comes up to offer help spontaneously, don't just look up at the sky, but … [Read more...] about ‘Pigeon poo’ pickpockets descend on tourists in Bruges

U.K. inflation tops 10% on soaring food and energy costs
Britain's annual inflation rate has touched doubled digits, climbing to 10.1% in July from a year ago — the sharpest increase since 1982. Consumer prices are rising even faster in the U.K. than in the U.S. and Europe, propelled by higher food and energy costs. The jump in the U.K.'s consumer price index was higher than analysts' forecast of 9.8% and up from the annual rate of 9.4% in June, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said Wednesday. The increase was largely due to rising prices for food and staples, including toilet paper and toothbrushes, it said. Core inflation, which strips out volatile, food and energy prices, also surpassed analyst forecasts, hitting 6.2% in July. "As expected, food was the main driver of inflation, but the drivers were broad-based, with categories such as clothing, rents and travel [and] transport services also putting significant upside pressure on both core and headline," TD Securities analysts said in a research note. Expect inflation in … [Read more...] about U.K. inflation tops 10% on soaring food and energy costs
