Heathrow has been hit by another day of travel chaos with hundreds of passengers left without luggage and caught up in lengthy queues. Huge lines were seen snaking around the outside of the London airport this morning, as it continues to be hit by staffing shortages. One traveller described the "chaos" and "lengthy wait times" at Terminal 2, saying there "simply is not enough space to queue". Tensions appeared to boil over at one point, with "some flare-ups" being reported between the public and stressed-out staff. Airlines were even forced to "fish" customers out of security queues for final calls, said another passenger, who spent two and a half hours waiting inside the airport. Footage capturing "hundreds of cases" piled up at baggage reclaim, which is the responsibility of the airlines and their ground handlers, was also posted to Twitter this morning. It is the third day in a row that Heathrow has faced delays, after travellers compared the scenes to something out … [Read more...] about Heathrow chaos as hundreds lose luggage and airlines ‘fish passengers out of queues’

Flights halted after plane skids off runway during landing
A plane has gone off the end of a runway during landing at Cardiff Airport, reportedly leaving flights cancelled, delayed and diverted. Travellers faced fresh chaos today when the runway was closed for about an hour on Sunday. No one was injured in the incident, which took place around 1.30pm, and the plane is still intact. But a Wizz Air flight from Cardiff Airport to Larnaca was later cancelled, passengers claim. The incident was named ‘a shambles’ after the journey was delayed by several hours earlier. Passengers arriving in Cardiff on a Wizz Air flight from Corfu were also left frustrated when they were sent to Bristol instead. They landed an hour late before being forced to sit on the runway for nearly two hours, Wales Online reports. One person on Twitter said: ‘On Wizz Air flight from Corfu. Was supposed to land at 1330 in Cardiff. ‘Currently waiting on Tarmac in Bristol. Apparently we’re waiting to refuel and get a new landing slot in Cardiff. Vetting of airport staff fast-tracked to ease travel chaos
Security checks on aviation staff will be fast tracked in an attempt to cut delays at Britain's airports. The Department for Transport said it was speeding up the vetting process for new staff to help tackle the travel chaos that has plagued travellers for months. Holidaymakers faced more disruption on Saturday, with thousands of passengers at Heathrow hit by delays caused by a computer failure that left planes unable to refuel and "horrendous" scenes at the baggage reclaim area. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said that by speeding up the vetting of new aviation security staff, the Government was "doing its bit to help deliver for passengers". Counter terrorism checks on staff, which previously took up to 20 days, are now being done in half the time, he said. New staff are also carrying out other training while their security checks are ongoing. Airlines are expected to announce a series of cancellations to summer flights next week aimed at minimising disruption in the … [Read more...] about Vetting of airport staff fast-tracked to ease travel chaos

O'Leary … [Read more...] about Greves e despedimentos na Ryanair: o que está em causa?
Bakery threatened with legal action over ‘discriminatory’ cheese sandwich name
A bakery has been blasted for naming a sandwich 'Cheesus Christ', with one angry customer threatening to take legal action over it. The Bridge Bakehouse learned it may have caused offence after receiving a letter claiming there was "clearly a case to answer" for "discrimination against Christians ". While the letter falsely claimed to come from the religious advocacy group Christian Concern, it appears the pun has left someone seething. The letter read: "Although our clients would prefer to settle this matter outside of the court, there is clearly a case to answer here. "Our clients do not wish to take this further, but feel they will need to in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and saviour if action is not taken." South Canterbury community calling retiring District Court Judge Joanna Maze
Retiring Judge Joanna Maze, is looking forward to losing her anonymity in the South Canterbury community she loves but has remained at arm’s length from for the past 11 years. Maze, Timaru's resident District Court judge since September 2011, finished her final court sitting on Friday with "a courtesy farewell between bench and bar" and told The Timaru Herald she made the decision to retire "when I knew that I was beginning to run out of energy ... and a sense that I wanted to have some time left still to do things for myself". "It's a job where you have to maintain a degree of separateness in your life, and that does suit my personality, and this has been a wonderful community to be part of, but I'm ready to be more part of it and that isn't entirely consistent with being a judge in a small community,’’ she said. "South Canterbury really is a delightful community. The people have good values, it is a caring community, it is an ideal size. It's more like a big village really. … [Read more...] about South Canterbury community calling retiring District Court Judge Joanna Maze
Snakes, swamps and whisky: the British explorers who went on the ultimate boys’ own adventure
In the early months of 1972, word passed between the indigenous tribes living in the Darien Gap that a man with mythical powers had arrived in the remote swamplands between Colombia and Panama. He wore a white pith helmet and a clipped pencil moustache and was leading an expedition team of two Range Rovers, 59 men, five women and 28 pack horses through the jungle. He carried enough dynamite to blast swathes of trees to smithereens and at night would use a radio set to call in an Army Beaver light aircraft to drop supplies of petrol and beer, which the remote Indians living in the Darien Gap described as “firewater”. “They thought we had magic,” recalls Colonel John Blashford-Snell . “And told each other the most wonderful stories about us.” Blashers, as he is known, who was then a major in the Royal Engineers, was already considered one of the greatest British explorers of the 20th century. A few years previously he had led a successful expedition, as the first European to … [Read more...] about Snakes, swamps and whisky: the British explorers who went on the ultimate boys’ own adventure
Grenfell, five years on: ‘We know who the guilty are but they remain free’
The pain is still raw; the anger undiminished. Marlene Anderson breaks down in tears as she remembers watching Grenfell Tower burning, the white ash floating out of the sky and landing on her hair and clothes, while inside the building her father – although she wouldn’t officially know it for another two months – had perished in the blaze. Ray ‘Moses’ Bernard, an electrician, who had worked in the House of Lords and at Buckingham Palace, died of suffocation and cyanide poisoning killed by the acrid smoke. By the time his body was recovered, “his remains were no more than 30 per cent of who he was”. Moses, as everybody knew him, was found on the floor next to his bed, his dog, Marley, close by. On the bed were other victims who had sought refuge in the top floor flat as they tried to escape the flames. Among them was Jessica Urbano Ramirez, a 12-year-old girl, who had spent 55 minutes on the phone to 999 emergency operators begging to be rescued, and 12-year-old Biruk Haftom, whose … [Read more...] about Grenfell, five years on: ‘We know who the guilty are but they remain free’
