At least 500 flights have been cancelled and many others are delayed as a result of a 24 hour strike by Italian aviation workers. Alitalia, the national airline, began grounding flights on Monday evening, and has axed more than 300 departures. A dozen UK flights have been cancelled today by Alitalia – six flights on between London City and Milan, four between Heathrow and Rome, and a single round trip between Heathrow and Milan Linate. In addition, the first Wednesday morning departure from Heathrow to Rome is cancelled, the Express reports. The strike has also seen easyJet cancel 30 of its routes to and from airports in the country today, Tuesday, as airline, airport and air traffic control staff launch a coordinated demonstration. A 24-hour coordinated strike by Italian airport workers is causing hundreds of upcoming flights to be canceled. The cause of the strike is disputes over pay and working conditions, with Milan and Rome airports expected to be the worst affected with the most flight cancellations. Alitalia, Italy's national airline, has grounded over 300 flights between now and Wednesday morning, according to its website. Flights today will operate as scheduled during peak times between 7 to 10 a.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m. reported Alitalia in a news release. "Alitalia has taken special measures to mitigate customer inconvenience by operating bigger aircraft on domestic and international routes." FLYBE passengers hoping to enjoy the inaugural flight from Newquay to London Heathrow were left sorely disappointed after the plane broken down. Instead, the passengers were on board were forced to take a six-hour replacement bus to get to their final destinations. The inaugural flight was due to take place on Sunday at 6:15pm. Flight BE2187 was then cancelled at 8pm due to a technical fault, according to the Independent. The next flight that had free seats was the following day at 2:30pm. Passengers were told they could travel by bus at 9pm instead, on a journey that took approximately six hours. Many customers complained about missing work as well as paying for additional taxis and hotels as a result of the cancelled flight.
