Holidaymakers' plans have been thrown into chaos after British Airways pilots confirmed they will strike across three days in September. Thousands of people received emails overnight warning flights on September 9, 10 and 27 would be hit by a "large number of delays and cancellations" after the British Airline Pilots' Association (Balpa) union confirmed the action. In addition, some customers flying between the 8th and 12th have been told their flight has been cancelled. The union said 93% of members voted in favour of the action after rejecting a pay rise package of 11.5% over three years. It said strikes were a "last resort" born out of "enormous frustration" with airline management, which it said had rejected numerous proposed deals. "A day of strike action will cost BA around £40 million," a spokesperson for Balpa said. "Three days will cost in the region of £120 million. "Our proposal remains on the table should BA wish to reach agreement prior to strike action." … [Read more...] about Fury as British Airways strikes ’cause five days of flight cancellations’

Lockerbie, Wednesday, 21 December 1988, 7.03pm Bunty Galloway had just sat down in front of the television to watch This is Your Life. Outside it was windy and cold. No one was out on the narrow street in front of her house. Many of Bunty's neighbours were also watching TV and others were wrapping gifts. It was four days before Christmas. Suddenly, Bunty noticed a strange noise. She had never heard anything like it in her life. It was coming rapidly closer with a rising groan and howl as if at any moment the noise would make the house explode like a kettle under pressure. When she got to the door to look out, the roar had abruptly stopped. Now it was dark and quiet. The electricity had gone out. When she looked outside, the scene was as awful and bizarre as a Hieronymus Bosch version of hell: a wall of flames, down a hill and only about 600 metres away, was bathing the town in orange light. It smelled of kerosene. A terrace house was crushed from above, as if an enormous hammer had … [Read more...] about What really happened on Flight 103?
A couple who paid a £3,000 deposit for a dream holiday cancelled the trip to do their bit for the environment. Retired university lecturer Al Venables, 75, and his partner Jane Hobdell, lost their cash for the cruise to Alaska after changing their minds. Since booking the trip around the Aleutian Islands the pair listened to their consciences about the long haul flight to Vancouver and decided not to go. They say it has been a tough decision because Al has been fascinated by the Aleutian Islands since he was 11 years old and promised himself he would get there one day. Al, of Cainscross, Stroud, Gloucestershire, who lectured on microbiology and genetics, said his interest began when he saw a film about the Aleutian islands wildlife 64 years ago. "I've always been into wildlife, and I was fascinated by the Aleutians," he said. "They are a chain of islands in south west Alaska, at the bottom of Bering sea. "They're volcanic but no longer active. "In back of my mind there has always … [Read more...] about Couple pay £3,000 for dream holiday then cancel as ‘flying’s bad for environment’
