Both Jess Molina and Geoff Simmons love their mahi. But they’re among Kiwi workers who are ditching the 40-hour week slog for a better work-life balance. “I think the pandemic has really made us all evaluate our lives and ways of living,” Molina, 29, said. The “anti-work” movement had gained traction since the beginning of the pandemic, and is the belief that people should only work as much as they need to, rather than working a traditional 40-hour, five-day week many are contracted to do. A subreddit about anti-work had attracted more than 1.7 million followers and counting, up from about 100,000 in March 2020. The Supreme Court’s EPA Ruling Is Going to Be Very, Very Expensive
Today’s major environmental ruling from the Supreme Court, West Virginia v. EPA, is probably most notable for what it did not do. It did not say that the Environmental Protection Agency is prohibited from regulating heat-trapping carbon pollution from America’s existing power plants. It also did not strip the EPA of its ability to regulate climate pollution at all. In short, it did not, as some progressives feared, blast away any possibility of using the federal government’s environmental powers to solve climate change, the biggest environmental problem of our time. Yet its effects will be felt for years to come. The ruling limits the EPA’s ability to regulate climate change, but leaves enough room that the agency still must try to do so. With these constraints, the Court is forcing the agency to approach the problem of carbon pollution with brute-force tools. In short, the Court has ensured that climate regulation, when it comes, will prove both more cumbersome … [Read more...] about The Supreme Court’s EPA Ruling Is Going to Be Very, Very Expensive
Prince Charles took more than 20 private flights within the UK ‘to avoid being stuck in traffic’
The Prince of Wales took more than 20 private flights, including several helicopters, within the UK last year in order to avoid being stuck in traffic, it has emerged. The heir to the throne is said to be “allergic” to travelling by helicopter, one of the most polluting modes of travel. However, the annual Sovereign Grant report revealed that he took several flights during the last financial year, including hopping between engagements in Northern Ireland and Wales and a 70-mile trip from London to RAF Brize Norton, in order to catch a charter flight to Jordan. The Prince and the Duchess of Cornwall also appear to have flown separately to Wales by helicopter from their respective homes, Highgrove in Gloucestershire and Ray Mill in Wiltshire. The couple took more than 15 charter flights, including to and from Belfast, and multiple journeys from residence to residence - including Glasgow to Northolt last July and Northolt to Marham to Aberdeen in December. Online editing creates idealised and potentially dangerous images of women, warns Martin Parr
He is renowned for capturing quintessentially British scenes with his camera, and for decades has depicted us with ice-cream dribbling down our faces, blistered flesh at the seaside and revelling in boozy street parties. Yet Martin Parr has revealed that people find his documentary work “upsetting” because it is realistic and unflattering. Furthermore, he blames “dangerous” social media filters for rendering us “so used to seeing the idealised view of everything”. In an interview with The Telegraph, he criticised editing tools for emphasising the “idealised image of how women should look”, instead of “normal women”. Showing things as they really are Speaking of the responsibilities of tech companies at his gallery, the Martin Parr Foundation, in Bristol, he added: “I don’t think you can fight it. “And you can't stop people touching up images that are going to be published in a fashion magazine. But it just means the idealised way in which a woman looks is so far apart from … [Read more...] about Online editing creates idealised and potentially dangerous images of women, warns Martin Parr
Official: 8 more die as Haiti prisons lack food, water
An official said Thursday that at least eight inmates have died at an overcrowded prison in Haiti that ran out of food two months ago, adding to dozens of similar deaths this year as the country’s institutions crumble. Hunger and oppressive heat contributed to the inmates’ deaths reported this week by the prison in the southwest city of Les Cayes, Ronald Richemond, the city’s government commissioner, told The Associated Press. He said the prison houses 833 inmates. “Whoever can help should help immediately because the prisoners are in need," he said. The United Nations Security Council released a report last week saying 54 prison deaths related to malnutrition were documented in Haiti between January and April alone in the country of more than 11 million people. It urged Haiti’s government “to take the necessary measures to find a long-lasting solution to the prison food, water and medicine crisis.” Recommended Over £130m handed to housing providers … [Read more...] about Official: 8 more die as Haiti prisons lack food, water
UK weather: Exact date ’35C heatwave’ will start – and it’s just in time for the school holidays
BRITAIN could reach 35C right in time for the school holidays. It means families may be enjoying the soaring temperatures within less than a month. Most schools in England and Wales will be splitting up for the summer holidays by July 22. And experts are suggesting the heat may climb to 35C in time for this date. The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said he wouldn’t be surprised if we got 35C, but the Met Office reckons the weather will be 30C. Brian told The Sun: “At the moment long-range computer models are suggesting an increased likelihood of very warm conditions during the last third of July.
