The Doobie Brothers: “These are the better days”
This story was originally broadcast on "Sunday Morning" October 3, 2021. Considering they've been playing the riff for half a century, maybe it shouldn't be a surprise, but knocking the rust off never sounded so good, as this band tuning up in a rehearsal hall in Burbank. "A band like ours," said Patrick Simmons, "is a little different than a lot of bands, I think." The Doobie Brothers are more than a "little different," selling more than 50 million albums over the last 50 years. Correspondent Jim Axelrod said, "You can count on one hand and maybe have a few fingers left over the number of bands that have had that kind of longevity?" "Right. I think we all feel pretty lucky," said John McFee. While other members have come and gone over the years, Simmons, McFee, Michael McDonald and Tom Johnston – the core four Doobies – are all feeling pretty fortunate to still be playing together, and are not about to let the kind of festering resentments that broke up other bands (and … [Read more...] about The Doobie Brothers: “These are the better days”

Bristol’s St Pauls carnival future in doubt after funding withdrawn
Published 3 November 2015 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The future of Bristol's St Pauls carnival has been put into doubt after organisers have their funding pulled. Bristol City Council and Arts Council England said it was withholding funds from St Pauls Afrikan Caribbean Carnival (SPACC) with immediate effect. In a statement, the council said its funding criteria included a carnival but SPACC had failed to deliver one in 2015 and had no "clear plans" for 2016. Cleo Lake, from SPACC, said she "cannot understand" the decision. The annual carnival, which is a celebration of the city's Afro-Caribbean culture, dates back to the 1960s and is normally held in July. It is one of the biggest of its kind in Europe, with tens of thousands of people attending in 2014 . But this year it was cancelled due to "unforeseen challenges and setbacks" which organisers had … [Read more...] about Bristol’s St Pauls carnival future in doubt after funding withdrawn
Meghan Markle is heading to the U.S. alone to visit her friends and family for the first time since her wedding
Meghan Markle will visit the United States to see her friends and family without Prince Harry. Us Weekly reported that Markle's trip would take place before the couple undertook a royal tour of Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga, planned for October. This would coincide with the Invictus Games, the Paralympic-style competition for military veterans which was founded by the prince and is due to be held in Sydney from October 20 through October 27. The couple are said to be keen to go the United States together next year, so that Meghan can introduce Harry to "everything she loves about the U.S," and as a way to highlight and strengthen ties between the countries. Markle's solo trip would be an unofficial one, the magazine reported. Earlier in July, the couple visited Dublin on a two-day trip in which they met the Irish president and prime minister and were mobbed by fans. Days earlier, Markle's half sister, Samantha Markle, criticized her sibling on Twitter after … [Read more...] about Meghan Markle is heading to the U.S. alone to visit her friends and family for the first time since her wedding
