Published September 7, 2018 After a series of protest resignations from the national pro chef competition upon discovery that Iceland’s Master Chef Club was being sponsored in part by a fish farming company, the board of the club has decided to terminate its contract with the farm, RÚV reports. The club is comprised of many Icelandic pro chefs, who meet monthly and participate in an annual competition to choose the Chef of the Year. This year, it came to light that Arnarlax was one of the sponsors of the team, to the consternation of many of the chefs involved. In the wake of the revelation, fourteen chefs resigned from the team in protest. Ylfa Helgadóttir, one of the competitors, summed up the reasons best in a post she made on Facebook: “These production methods threaten the wild salmon and trout stocks and have many negative impacts on the environment,” she wrote in part. “I only use ingredients that are produced in a sustainable manner and in … [Read more...] about Icelandic Pro Chef Club Ends Contract With Fish Farming Company

‘Just one thing,’ says Audrey as she bashes the number into my phone. ‘Don’t pass this on – and don’t ever, ever mention her in print.’ It has taken me six months to persuade the most beautiful French woman I know to tell me who her cosmetologist is, and I’m not about to scupper this now. ‘I promise,’ I tell her, because my legs are crossed. Trying to extract a beauty secret from a French woman is like trying to teach Italians how to queue or Brits to complain in a restaurant. So giving a beauty columnist the details of Dr Ingrid Arion – the London-based beauty wizard to every model or actress you thought woke up just looking like that – was, in the words of Pretty Woman, a ‘big mistake – huge’. Because this little secret is about to be blown wide open. I wasn’t sure what a ‘cosmetologist’ was until I walked into Arion’s discreet west London clinic and … [Read more...] about Natural beauties? Pah. Scientists have produced evidence to show the negative impact of pesticides on our environment: air, water, soil, etc. We should be determined more than ever to preserve our biodiversity and willing to use alternative, more environmentally friendly products for our ornamental or kitchen gardens. Disagreements over the use of synthetic chemicals regularly hit the headlines; there are debates about glyphosate*, neonicotinoid insecticides, endocrine disrupters and so on. We all are concerned. The use of pesticides contaminates seriously our environment: loss of biodiversity, the huge mortality rate of bees, and this is not to mention fears for human health and human beings from residues in our food, our drinking water, etc. Gardening enthusiasts who want to grow healthy vegetables which their family can eat, now have the opportunity to produce them without using any pesticides, insecticides, etc. We should regain our biodiversity and garden with nature but without pesticides, as you … [Read more...] about “Let’s garden naturally!”
