David Fizdale was another example of the tragedy of the Knicks’ bad taste
David Fizdale, the recently fired head coach of the New York Knicks, is not a martyr, though you’d be forgiven for any confusion. Luminaries such as San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich and LeBron James have eulogized Fizdale as if he were a doomed hero tossed into war by negligent leadership. On those terms, his NBA death isn’t so bad: Fizdale will cash some $17m in checks from the league’s most dysfunctional franchise over the next two seasons, a happy return for him on 18 months of forgettable work. To be clear: his bosses did suck, and the roster was wretched, but Fizdale didn’t really give the world any reason to mourn him, either. The widespread support for the canned coach comes as no surprise. Across the league, the youngish, charismatic Fizdale is about as admired as the ancient, accursed Knicks are ridiculed. Players get along with him. He seems to be a good guy. In fact, Fizdale’s talent for relationship building was a major reason he was … [Read more...] about David Fizdale was another example of the tragedy of the Knicks’ bad taste

Bundesliga: Bayern Munich held in Leipzig
RB Leipzig 1-1 Bayern Munich Both Manuel Neuer and Peter Gulacsi made big saves to keep the scores level in an exciting game between two top sides in the Bundesliga. The visitors took an early lead when Robert Lewandowski converted a one-on-one chance after great work by Thomas Müller. Bayern, who lost David Alaba to injury in the warm up (Jerome Boateng replaced him), were dominant in the first half and should have added at least another goal. After they correctly had a penalty taken away by the VAR, Bayern found themselves facing a spot kick after a silly foul by Lucas Hernandez on the turning Yussuf Poulsen. Emil Forsberg converted from the spot to undeservedly level the scores for Leipzig at the break. Julian Nagelsmann was somewhat slow to react in changing his approach, but in the second half his side was much improved. Nordi Mukiele forced a brilliant save out of Neuer, then Timo Werner hit the side netting and fired wide. However, as the game headed into the final … [Read more...] about Bundesliga: Bayern Munich held in Leipzig

JAMES ANDERSON took another stride towards an England comeback and said he wants to open the bowling with Jofra Archer. Anderson sent down 20 overs for Lancashire 2nd XI yesterday and took 1-38 against Durham 2nd XI. At one stage, his figures were 15-8-16-1. He has a good chance of being in England's squad for the Fourth Test to be played at his home ground Old Trafford, starting next Wednesday. The Ashes series is level at 1-1 after Ben Stokes' heroics at Headingley. Anderson, 37, left the field with a calf injury after bowling four overs in the First Test at Edgbaston and has not played for England since. He said: "After a few weeks of frustration, I feel I'm getting somewhere."I had a few good days at Headingley, bowling and running with no discomfort, and I'm treating the 2nd XI match like a normal game and will not restrict myself in any way. ENGLAND'S BEST "I want to get in more decent overs and prove my fitness."
