The Bank of England believes the country will enter a recession by Christmas which will last for 15 months. Money experts and financial figures have predicted that Britain will suffer its longest downturn since the 2008 financial crisis in the coming months. The Bank’s monetary policy committee have warned: ‘Real household post-tax income is projected to fall sharply in 2022 and 2023, while consumption growth turns negative.’ While a recession affects people in different ways , homeowners and those hoping to get on the property ladder will particularly want to look at what a recession does to the housing market. Metro.co.uk spoke exclusively with the executive director of Zoopla , Richard Donnell, to explore what it could mean for them. Do house prices/values decrease in a recession? We asked Richard about whether properties will decrease in value for those looking to sell, or if those looking to buy will be able to snag properties for a lower price. … [Read more...] about What happens to house prices in a recession? UK to unseat Champagne wine production due to climate change, finds study
The UK could unseat top wine-producing regions Champagne and Burgundy in France due to the effects of climate change, according to a new study. The Climate Resilience in the UK Wine Sector study found that rising temperatures over the coming years could make Britain a major player in quality wine production. Looking at climate projections, researchers said temperatures in the UK wine-growing regions may rise by 1.4°C by 2040 -- on top of the one degree rise since the 1980s. This will mean the amount of sugar in UK grapes would be more consistent with better wine quality and higher alcohol content, they said. "Production here in the UK has been able to produce sparkling wines that are of a style that are very similar to those produced in Champagne," said lead researcher Professor Stephen Dorling. "The climate has been helping more and more to match that French production," he added. Researchers noted that the best regions to grow Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes … [Read more...] about UK to unseat Champagne wine production due to climate change, finds study
A year since Brexit: English winemakers get creative to beat ‘nightmare’ labour shortages
It wasn't just the wettest summer in decades and biting spring frosts that England's burgeoning sparkling wine industry had to deal with this year. Brexit has also cast a long shadow, whether it's labour shortages, missing shipments or bureaucratic headaches. The lack of staff has hit hard: winemakers say for the first time they have struggled to find enough pickers for harvest. Compounded by COVID restrictions, Brexit has led to a “sizable” reduction in the number of migrant labourers coming to England to pick grapes, according to Julia Trustram Eve, head of marketing at trade association WineGB. “It was the perfect storm,” she said. “Inevitably, an awful lot of migrant workers went back because of COVID, but they didn't return.” 'An absolute nightmare' Dermot Sugrue, a winemaker from West Sussex in southern England and credited with putting English sparkling wine on the map, agrees. “Brexit is arguably the biggest crisis this industry has faced,” he told … [Read more...] about A year since Brexit: English winemakers get creative to beat ‘nightmare’ labour shortages
Hadrian’s Wall: Ideas sought to boost visitor numbers

I had no control in my relationships for 30 years – not anymore
‘Time to pull on your big-girl pants” is an expression that never fails to make me laugh. Although I’m not entirely sure what it means, it reminds me of something equally nonsensical my mother used to come out with after some childish disaster or other. “Buck up and be a rabbit,” she’d say to soothe me. I learnt grit and determination from my mother, and also from being bullied, aged six, when my family moved from Manchester to Edinburgh. Sounding exactly like Deirdre Barlow from Coronation Street when I arrived, I remember the first day at my new Scottish state primary as though it were yesterday. No one understood a word I said. If you read last week’s column, admittedly the saddest I’ve written so far, you’ll know I’m now officially divorced. Although I have focused on nothing else for the past two years, the email announcing my status update from “married” to “divorced” came as a massive shock, regardless. As the days pass, the raw loneliness begins to fade and I feel … [Read more...] about I had no control in my relationships for 30 years – not anymore
Since becoming single in my late 40s, I’ve somehow attracted the wrong kinds of men
I’ve joined TikTok and it makes me laugh out loud every single day. Put it this way, Twitter is a viper’s nest of bitchy remarks, Facebook is where my mother and my aunty Doreen “hang” and Instagram a dull stream of perfection. TikTok, however, is rumbunctious, rebellious and even, dare I say, a silly, subversive, neverending stream of entertainment . Forget irritating dances (that’s so Lockdown 2020, darlings) the people I follow are like nothing I’ve seen on any other social media channel. From undiscovered kitchen comedians whose day-to-day lives are way funnier than any sitcom I’ve come across to psychotherapist and author Esther Perel who specialises in relationships, TikTok is better than Netflix. I’ve just ordered Perel’s best-selling novel, Mating in Captivity, as the excerpts she quotes throughout her pieces to camera have really resonated. In one such video she says (in the context of dating and relationships), “stop constantly looking at people as a product. Where … [Read more...] about Since becoming single in my late 40s, I’ve somehow attracted the wrong kinds of men
Tesla’s profits knocked by China factory shutdowns as it sells Bitcoin
Tesla has fallen victim to supply chain chaos in China and a damaging bet on Bitcoin, bringing a record run of profits at Elon Musk’s car company to a sudden end. The electric vehicle maker also sold off a chunk of its Bitcoin holdings, the company said on Wednesday, as its bet on the cryptocurrency soured. Revenues at Tesla dropped by 9pc between the second and first quarter to $16.9bn (£14.1bn), though were still 42pc higher than a year earlier. Its revenues were down on the record three-month revenues of $18.8bn it posted earlier this year amid supply chain woes and a factory shut down in China due to Covid restrictions. Telsa said it “faced certain challenges, including limited production and shutdowns in Shanghai for the majority of the quarter” but claimed it “continued to make significant progress across the business during the second quarter of 2022”. Earlier this month, Tesla reported it had delivered more than 254,000 electric vehicles, down from around 300,000 in … [Read more...] about Tesla’s profits knocked by China factory shutdowns as it sells Bitcoin
UK weather: Farmers warn of crop failure in biggest English drought in 20 years
The biggest drought in 20 years has been declared across the majority of England, as farmers said half their crops could fail, households were warned of taps running dry and supermarkets faced water shortages . An official drought has been declared in eight of 14 areas across England, encompassing most of the central and southern parts of the country. Yorkshire Water has announced its first hosepipe ban in 27 years , joining four other companies who are bringing in restrictions. Jamie Hannaford, a hydrologist at the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, said it was the most widespread drought since at least 2003. “This drought is notable for how large an area it’s been affecting through the summer of 2022,” he said. “It’s more widespread than the 2018-19 and 2010-12 events and overall drought conditions are more extensive than 2004-6.” The decision to announce an official drought was made at a meeting of the National Drought Group, attended by officials, farmers, … [Read more...] about UK weather: Farmers warn of crop failure in biggest English drought in 20 years
Russia “humiliated”‘ by Ukraine, U.S. HIMARS around Kherson: U.K. author
Russian forces have been "publicly humiliated" by Ukraine's use of U.S-supplied High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) in Kherson, according to author Louise Mensch. Two key bridges into the Russian-occupied city of Kherson—which Kyiv has been working to retake— were heavily damaged by strikes on Wednesday, the British Ministry of Defence said. Ukrainian authorities reported on Saturday that the last working bridge over the river in the region had been damaged, further crippling Russian supply lines, according to The Associated Press. Mensch, a former Conservative member of Britain's parliament, described it as "the greatest tactical success in modern military history." Russian forces were "successfully baited into a giant motti, forced to run away," Mensch said. Newsweek could not independently verify whether any Russian forces had retreated. Alongside a video that apparently captured a HIMARS strike on the Antonivsky road bridge, Mensch wrote: "Not only is … [Read more...] about Russia “humiliated”‘ by Ukraine, U.S. HIMARS around Kherson: U.K. author
