Rihanna Becomes America’s Youngest Female Self-Made Billionaire, Knocking Kim Kardashian Down To Second Place | The Daily Wire

July 5, 2022 by www.dailywire.com

Rihanna just edged out Kim Kardashian to become the youngest female self-made billionaire in America, according to a New York Post report . The 34-year-old Grammy Award winner secured her spot on Forbes’ annual list of America’s richest self-made women for the third year in a row with a net worth of $1.4 billion. She earned the money thanks to her musical career, but most of the revenue came from selling products via her Fenty Beauty, Fenty Skin, and Savage X Fenty lingerie line. Rihanna is the 21st overall richest self-made woman and the only billionaire under 40 on the list. The next-youngest billionaire who made the cut is Kardashian, 41, boasting a net worth of $1.8 billion. Kardashian’s younger sister Kylie Jenner originally was the youngest billionaire per Forbes in 2018 but later had that title rescinded when it turned out her net worth was lower than initially estimated. Per the Post, Savage X Fenty is worth $3 billion, with Rihanna owning 30% … [Read more...] about Rihanna Becomes America’s Youngest Female Self-Made Billionaire, Knocking Kim Kardashian Down To Second Place | The Daily Wire

How flowers are ‘put to sleep’ for long sea voyages

June 30, 2022 by www.bbc.co.uk

By Andrea Dijkstra Published 4 days ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Workers in heavy coats shift boxes of flowers from a cold store into a refrigerated container. Once packed, these blooms will travel hundreds of miles by road, in a special 'controlled atmosphere' container from Nairobi to the coast. On arrival at Kenya's biggest seaport, Mombasa, the container is loaded onto a ship for a voyage to Europe of around 30 days. Despite their lengthy journey, they will still be sold to European shoppers with a vase-life of about a week. So, how is this possible? "The flowers will be kept at a temperature of 0.5 degrees celsius throughout the journey," says Elizabeth Kimani, the manager of quality and standards at Sian Flowers. As well as controlling the temperature, the atmosphere system in the container reduces the oxygen level from 20% to 4%, while increasing the … [Read more...] about How flowers are ‘put to sleep’ for long sea voyages

Coronavirus: Welsh manufacturers expect ‘gradual’ return

May 19, 2020 by www.bbc.co.uk

Published 19 May 2020 comments Comments Share close Share page Copy link About sharing There is a "desire" among companies to "get back to work", according to a business leader. But Paul Slevin, chair of the South Wales Chamber of Commerce, said firms would still face a "challenging time" and it was "over-optimistic" to think the economy would "just bounce back". Meanwhile, the plant director at Toyota's Deeside factory said it was "not under pressure" to hit its usual targets due to the lockdown. Staff can build engines in 44 seconds. But that is expected to be 10% slower since they returned to work last week and adopted new social distancing procedures. Tim Freeman, who is also deputy managing director of Toyota Manufacturing in the UK, said: "We're engaging with organisations such as the CBI ... but if there are other organisations who are interested to … [Read more...] about Coronavirus: Welsh manufacturers expect ‘gradual’ return

A Christopher Columbus statue in New York City has been placed under 24-hour watch

October 6, 2017 by www.newsweek.com

New York City's latest security concern: a statue of Christopher Columbus. The NYPD has placed the old marble statue near Central Park under 24/7 security to prevent it from being vandalized before the controversial holiday on Monday. Round-the-clock security for the statue gives it the same threat-level status as such notable targets as the Israeli mission to the U.N., the Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square, Trump Tower and the mayor himself. The NYPD declined to comment on threats to the statue but cited recent efforts to deface the Columbus monument. The monument of the Italian explorer was vandalized twice in September—once with pink nail polish, and once with red paint. "In light of recent vandalism, the NYPD has assigned patrol resources to maintain a post in the vicinity of the Columbus Statue," the NYPD said in a statement. A Newsweek reporter visited the Columbus Circle site on Friday and confirmed that at least one officer was indeed guarding a statue. Of course … [Read more...] about A Christopher Columbus statue in New York City has been placed under 24-hour watch

UK’s first mass-produced hydrogen truck unveiled

June 29, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

The first hydrogen and electric-powered lorry to be mass-produced in the UK has been unveiled. Start-up firm Tevva, based in Thurrock , Essex , has added a hydrogen fuel cell system to its battery-electric HGV design. The hydrogen tops up the battery, enabling the vehicle to carry heavier loads over longer distances. The 7.5-tonne hydrogen electric truck can be driven for up to 310 miles, according to Tevva. Recommended Over £130m handed to housing providers named and shamed by regulator The firm’s chief executive and founder Asher Bennett told the PA news agency: “When a zero emission truck is doing more miles per day, that is very good for the air we breathe, for the planet and for the economics of running electric trucks. “Every mile you drive on an electric truck, it’s so much cheaper than driving on a diesel truck. “If you’re concerned about range, and you’re not driving a lot of miles, you’re just not saving enough money as you could.” … [Read more...] about UK’s first mass-produced hydrogen truck unveiled

Germany, Nigeria to sign accord on return of Benin Bronzes

July 1, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

Germany and Nigeria are set to sign an agreement in Berlin Friday paving the way for the return of centuries-old sculptures known as the Benin Bronzes that were taken from Africa in the 19th century and displayed in German museums and elsewhere. Governments and museums in Europe and North America have increasingly sought to resolve ownership disputes over objects that were looted during colonial times. A British colonial expedition stole the bas-relief Bronzes along with a vast number of other treasures in 1897 from the royal palace of the Kingdom of Benin, in what’s now southern Nigeria. The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, an authority that oversees many of Berlin’s museums, announced last year that it was beginning formal negotiations on returning pieces that are in its collection. Many of them date from the 16th to the 18th centuries. The memorandum of understanding will be signed by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and Culture Minister … [Read more...] about Germany, Nigeria to sign accord on return of Benin Bronzes

100 Women: ‘We can’t teach girls of the future with books of the past’

October 9, 2017 by www.bbc.co.uk

Valeria Perasso Published 9 October 2017 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing In a textbook for students in Tanzania, boys are strong and athletic, while girls just look proud of their pretty frilly dresses. In a primary school reader in Haiti, pupils learn that mothers "take care of the kids and prepare the food" as fathers work "in an office". There's a Pakistani illustrated book where all politicians, authoritative and powerful, are male. In Turkey, a cartoon of a boy shows him dreaming of becoming a doctor. Meanwhile a girl imagines herself as a future bride in white gown. The list goes on - and knows no geographical boundaries. Gender bias is rife in primary school learning books and can be found, in a strikingly similar form, on every continent, various experts say. It is a problem "hidden in plain sight". "There are stereotypes of … [Read more...] about 100 Women: ‘We can’t teach girls of the future with books of the past’

1. Russian forces move onto Donetsk next after taking hold of entire Luhansk Ukrainian forces are today concentrating on defending Donetsk province in the eastern Donbas after Russia claimed to have taken control of neighbouring Luhansk. The Ukrainian General Staff said Russian forces were now focusing their efforts on pushing toward the line of Siversk, Fedorivka and Bakhmut in the Donetsk region, about half of which is controlled by Russia. The Russian army has also intensified its shelling of the key Ukrainian strongholds of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, deeper in Donetsk. On Monday, President Vladimir Putin claimed victory in Luhansk province and ordered his forces to continue their offensive in eastern Ukraine, as the five-month-long war entered a new phase. It came a day after Ukrainian forces withdrew from the city of Lysychansk, their last remaining bulwark of resistance in the province. 2.
