WCNC Published 7:14 PM EDT Oct 29, 2018 MATTHEWS, N.C. — A deadly shooting at a North Carolina high school was the result of a bullying incident "that escalated out of control," according to school officials. Police said 16-year-old Jatwan Cuffie allegedly shot Bobby McKeithen, also 16, during a fight at David W. Butler High School in Matthews, North Carolina. McKeithen later died and Cuffie was charged with first-degree murder. "Right now, this appears to be a tragedy that was the result of conflict between two individuals and an isolated event. First reports indicate that the conflict began with bullying that escalated out of control and as fear took over, a young person brought a gun to solve the problems. Law enforcement does not believe there is a danger of on-going threats to safety related to this incident," said Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Dr. Clayton Wilcox. Ballycastle High School held its annual prize day recently. Principal Ian Williamson welcomed guests, staff and pupils to the event.Addressing the audience, he began: “On a personal note, this month marks an anniversary for me in terms of my professional career. I have completed thirty years in the teaching profession. I can clearly remember that first morning in September 1988 as if it wasyesterday. “There’s a line in a song, from an album which was released in September 1988, that states: “The wheel keeps on turning and turning and turning and nothing’s disturbing the way it goes around.” As you might guess, the song promotes a view that the world is made up of inevitable patterns that tend to repeat in cycles, and this thought occurred to me as I sat down to write my Prize Day speech. Indeed, such is the consistency of the messages that emerge from any review of the year at Ballycastle High School that I briefly considered reading out my … [Read more...] about Ballycastle High School prize day
Wales' education watchdog has praised Cardiff's Willows High School for making progress with teaching and standards - but says major improvements are still needed. In its most recent inspection, Estyn gave the Tremorfa school its second-lowest rating, adequate, in four out of the five categories it assesses. The report is an improvement on the damning report the school received after its previous inspection in 2012. The inspections body praised the school's care and guidance and says areas such as standards, teaching and leadership are now adequate, although they still require improvement. The report, published on Wednesday (July 4), is a marked contrast from the previous full inspection at Willows High in 2012, when Estyn said the performance of the school was 'unsatisfactory' and pupils were not making enough progress. Estyn's latest report, based on an inspection in April 2018, found: "Willows High School has a caring and inclusive ethos, which supports pupils’ well-being … [Read more...] about What Estyn says about Educating Cardiff’s Willows High School
