Most US voters would support a “Green New Deal”, for the country to transform its infrastructure with a rapid shift to clean energy. But while the idea is gaining attention on Capitol Hill, it lacks key political support. According to a survey from the Yale Climate Change Communication program, 81% of voters backed its description of a Green New Deal. Similar plans vary in detail, but all are inspired by the New Deal that Franklin Delano Roosevelt launched to battle the effects of the Great Depression. The idea was central to the high-profile campaign of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the young Democratic socialist from New York who won a US House seat in November. Ocasio-Cortez and the youth-led Sunrise Movement are encouraging Democrats, who will retake the House majority in January, to produce a blueprint. Their Green New Deal would center around creating new jobs and lessening inequality. Aiming to virtually eliminate US greenhouse gas pollution in a decade, it would be … [Read more...] about What is the Green New Deal and is it technically possible?

brexit countdown_bg Created with Sketch. Speaker John Bercow today sparked fury by blocking Boris Johnson's latest bid to trigger a vote on his Brexit deal. MPs denied the PM 'in principle' approval for his deal over the weekend, instead postponing the showdown and obliging him to ask the EU for an extension. A fresh effort to stage the vote was turned down by Mr Bercow this afternoon, despite Tories accusing him of 'sabotage' to stop Brexit and branding him a 'poor man's Cromwell'. He insisted the 'meaningful' vote would break the Commons convention against asking MPs the same question twice in quick succession. 'It is clear that the motions are in substance the same,' he said. 'The motion will not be debated today as it would be repetitive and disorderly to do so.' But senior Tory Bernard Jenkin was among those who protested about the ruling in the House. While admitting Speakers cannot always please everyone, he jibed: 'It is becoming remarkable how often you please … [Read more...] about Fury as Speaker John Bercow BLOCKS fresh bid by Boris Johnson to trigger a vote on his Brexit deal – with ministers vowing to force legislation through Parliament this week
The Queen, along with Prince Charles, could make more than £100million a year from the huge expansion of offshore windfarms The Queen and Prince Charles could make more than £100million a year from the huge expansion of offshore windfarms – thanks to a change in the way that the monarchy is funded. The green energy earnings of the Royal Family are being significantly boosted by an auction, which formally began last week, for the biggest offshore windpower development in the world. If they were still being paid by the long-established Civil List, the Royals would not have benefited. However, the then Chancellor George Osborne replaced it in 2012 with the Sovereign Grant. Crucially, the deal gives the Queen 25 per cent of the profits from the Crown Estate, which owns the seabed within Britain's territorial waters that extend almost 14 miles from the coast. The Crown Estate charges rent equal to two per cent of revenues for use of its seabeds for windfarms and … [Read more...] about Queen’s £100m a year windfall: Green energy earnings of the Royal Family are set to be boosted by an auction for the biggest offshore windpower development in the world
If you’re interested in the end of the world, you’re interested in New Zealand. If you’re interested in how our current cultural anxieties – climate catastrophe, decline of transatlantic political orders, resurgent nuclear terror – manifest themselves in apocalyptic visions, you’re interested in the place occupied by this distant archipelago of apparent peace and stability against the roiling unease of the day. If you’re interested in the end of the world, you would have been interested, soon after Donald Trump’s election as US president, to read a New York Times headline stating that Peter Thiel, the billionaire venture capitalist who co-founded PayPal and was an early investor in Facebook, considered New Zealand to be “the Future”. Because if you are in any serious way concerned about the future, you’re also concerned about Thiel, a canary in capitalism’s coal mine who also happens to have profited lavishly from … [Read more...] about Why Silicon Valley billionaires are prepping for the apocalypse in New Zealand
Boris Johnson has been told his new Brexit proposals show he “does not understand Northern Ireland” or the way the assembly in Stormont works. Sylvia Hermon, the independent MP for North Down, accused the prime minister of “dancing to the tune” of the Democratic Unionist party while forgetting that the majority of voters in Northern Ireland backed remain in the EU referendum. What is the concern about Stormont having a role? Firstly there is an existential issue. The Northern Ireland assembly collapsed almost three years ago after a row between the DUP and Sinn Féin and remains suspended. Secondly, the Irish taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, has raised concerns that the proposals could give any party a veto on whether Northern Ireland remains in regulatory alignment with the EU after Brexit. What happens if Stormont does not return? The proposal requires Stormont to approve the special arrangements for Northern Ireland to remain aligned with the EU before the end … [Read more...] about What are the concerns over Stormont’s role in proposed Brexit deal?
