Picture: hollicom.co.uk Archant City of Norwich athlete Dani Nimmock has won the first big city marathon of the season. Nimmock triumphed at Sundya’s Greater Manchester Marathon, in a personal best time of two hours, 38 minutes and 24 seconds. Garscube Harriers’ Katie White made a fast start in the women’s race and had an 11-second lead at the 10km mark. But Nimmock impressively made up the ground by the halfway point. Nimmock, who ran 1:14:13 at The Big Half in London last month, took control in the second half and crossed the line to win by almost three minutes. After the race she tweeted: “Running through this tape was a moment I’ll never forget! It's going to be a miserable weekend weather-wise – but it won’t stop it being a massive weekend for Manchester. Tens of thousands of people are expected to descend on the city over the coming days for music and sporting events. It'll be an overcast evening, but mainly dry, which is good news for those travelling to the Manchester Arena to watch The Courteeners. On Sunday, the Asics Greater Manchester Marathon takes place in Trafford with around 12,000 runners signed up to take part. Weather-wise it will be dry but cloudy, with the sun possibly showing its face later on in the afternoon. Temperatures over the weekend will be around 11-13c. Those travelling to Manchester in the coming days are also being reminded that roads and public transport will be busier than usual. Transport bosses expect Metrolink and the buses to be affected from 4pm onwards. The Courteeners, Arcade Fire, the Greater Manchester Marathon and the long-awaited derby match could bring a ‘perfect storm’ of traffic this weekend. Competitors, spectators, shoppers and football fans are among those advised to plan ahead in preparation for the mammoth few days. Manchester City host arch-rivals United at the Etihad on Saturday at 5.30pm. Around 50,000 fans are due to attend. Roads and public transport are expected to be busier than usual, with Metrolink and the buses to be affected from 4pm onwards. The game will be followed by The Courteeners at Manchester Arena . The Manchester Marathon 2018 takes place this Sunday, with around 12,000 runners expected to wind their way from Chester Road to back again, via Stretford, Sale and Altrincham. Sponsored by Asics, the run has three official charity partners - Cancer Research UK, Alzheimers and JustGiving - but attracts runners who want to challenge themselves for their own good causes. The race also has local charity partners in The Christie and The Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. The Manchester Evening News will livestream this year’s Greater Manchester Run in what is thought to be a first for the UK regional press. Thousands will be able to watch the event, on 8 April, from anywhere in the world on the MEN’s website thanks to a partnership with race organiser Xtra Mile Events and the Trinity Mirror-owned daily newspaper.
