Girl, 3, was ‘left inside water tank by parents’ while they went to work
This is the shocking moment a three-year-old girl crying for help was freed from a water tank after her parents allegedly abandoned her inside. Footage shows the little girl sobbing as she crawled out of the five-foot tall tank after two police officers gently lowered it to the ground. She reportedly told them ‘mom and dad don’t want me’ during the rescue in Valle de Chalco, Mexico, on June 18. Concerned neighbours had called the police to inspect the backyard after hearing the child’s heartbreaking cries for help. They could be seen standing on the other side of the high fence as officers helped the youngster. The child was clutching a plush toy in her little arms as she was comforted. Her mum, María Lucila, and her stepdad, Javier, were both immediately taken into custody after they returned home. Lucila claimed there was no one to watch their child while they went to work, so they thought of ‘safekeeping’ her inside the empty tank. One of the officers said: … [Read more...] about Girl, 3, was ‘left inside water tank by parents’ while they went to work
Maradona set to take charge
And Maradona will fly to England this weekend to meet Manchester United striker Carlos Tevez and Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano. The Argentina legend has not yet been confirmed as his country's new manager, as the Argentinian FA board must ratify his appointment at a meeting next Tuesday. However that is considered a simple formality, and the 48-year-old expects to be in charge of the national team for the November 19 clash with George Burley's Scots. Maradona has revealed, though, that star forward Lionel Messi will not make the trip to Glasgow for the match. Argentina have an arrangement with Messi's club, Barcelona, which means the 21-year-old does not play in every friendly. … [Read more...] about Maradona set to take charge
Blazes rage in Spain with temperatures topping 40°C in European heatwave
Firefighters in Spain are battling wildfires across country amid a sweltering and unusual 40°C heatwave. More than 500 firefighters supported by the military are being backed up by water-dumping planes and helicopters, to tackle blazes around the country. The worst fire started in Sierra de la Culebra, in the north-west province of Zamora, which has consumed 25,000ha and forced the evacuation of at least ten villages. German fire fighters are also struggling to contain fires. There have been no reported deaths in either country, but the flames reached the outskirts of some villages near Berlin and Spain’s Zamora and central Navarra. Spanish military firefighting units have been deployed in both areas and Lleida. But there are concerns that the worst could be yet to come with the unseasonably high temperatures not expected to drop until Wednesday at the earliest in Spain. Video footage taken by car passengers also showed flames on the side of roads. Spanish … [Read more...] about Blazes rage in Spain with temperatures topping 40°C in European heatwave

As summit host, Spain urges NATO to watch its southern flank
While Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is certain to dominate an upcoming NATO summit in Madrid, Spain and other member nations are quietly pushing the Western alliance to consider how mercenaries aligned with Russian President Vladimir Putin are spreading Moscow's influence to Africa. As the host of the summit taking place from Tuesday to Thursday, Spain wants to emphasize its proximity to Africa as it lobbies for a greater focus on Europe’s southern flank in a new document outlining NATO's vision of its security challenges and tasks. The Strategic Concept is NATO’s most important working document after the North Atlantic Treaty of 1949, which contained the key provision holding that an attack on one member is viewed as an attack upon all. The security assessment is updated roughly every decade to reset the West's security agenda. The current version, approved in Lisbon in 2010, stated the risk of a conventional war on NATO territory was “low.” It did not explicitly … [Read more...] about As summit host, Spain urges NATO to watch its southern flank
