Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said that Republicans will likely unveil their proposals for another round of economic relief next week amid the surging coronavirus pandemic. "We shouldn't lightly add more to the national debt, but I'm predicting that we will have one more rescue package, which we'll begin to debate and discuss next week," McConnell said at a news conference in Kentucky, his home state, on Monday. "When my members come back next week, we'll start socializing it with them, begin to discuss it with the Democrats and start the legislative process," the GOP senator explained. "I think you can anticipate this coming to a head sometime within the next three weeks, beginning next week." McConnell suggested that something could be accomplished before the August recess, which is scheduled to start August 10. Reached for comment by Newsweek , a representative for McConnell said that he had no further details to share about the economic stimulus proposal … [Read more...] about GOP pitching own stimulus relief plan likely, including direct checks as early as next week, McConnell says

Trump “losing control” of GOP “every day” amid Jan. 6 hearings: Frank Luntz
Former President Donald Trump 's tight grip on the Republican Party is slipping every day amid congressional hearings into the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, said Republican consultant and pollster Frank Luntz. The House select committee spent a year investigating the insurrection, which saw hundreds of Trump supporters attack the Capitol in an effort to disrupt the formal certification of President Joe Biden 's electoral college victory for the 2020 presidential election. This month in a series of televised hearings, the committee has sought to point to Trump and his allies' efforts to thwart the election results , based on unfounded claims of widespread voter fraud, as a key factor that led to the riot. So far, they have made several potentially damaging allegations against the ex-president that could be repelling some Republicans , Luntz said. GOP should pick candidates without Trump’s ‘erratic personal behavior’: Barr
Former U.S. Attorney General William Barr urged the GOP to pick new candidates who don't exhibit the "erratic personal behavior" that former President Donald Trump had. In his new book, One Damn Thing After Another , which releases next month, Barr criticized Trump and his behavior towards the 2020 presidential election as he urged Republicans to drop the former president as the party's dominant figure. He said Republicans should focus on "an impressive array of younger candidates" who share Trump's conservative agenda, according to extracts from his book. However, the former attorney general didn't reveal the names of specific candidates. Barr noted in his book that Trump could have won the 2020 presidential election if he had "just exercised a modicum of self-restraint, moderating even a little of his pettiness," The Wall Street Journal reported. Barr also noted that it is time for Republicans to move on from Trump who has "shown he has neither the temperament nor … [Read more...] about GOP should pick candidates without Trump’s ‘erratic personal behavior’: Barr

False claims about the 2020 presidential election and the House select committee's January 6 investigation featured prominently during the Republican Wyoming primary debate as Representative Liz Cheney faced off against four challengers, including the Donald Trump -backed Harriet Hageman. The debate, hosted by Wyoming PBS , saw Cheney, Hageman, Robyn Belinskey, Senator Anthony Bouchard and Denton Knapp discuss a number of issues ahead of the August 16 primary, including how to deal with rising inflation and infrastructure development. However, it was the 2020 election and the House select committee's investigation into the riot at the U.S. Capitol, of which Cheney is a vice chair, that dominated proceedings. Cheney, who is fighting for her political future after being censured by the Republican National Committee and the Wyoming GOP voting to no longer recognize her as part of the party due to her role on the January 6 panel and criticism of Trump, fought accusations from … [Read more...] about Liz Cheney and Trump-backed challenger clash at Wyoming GOP debate

David Hogg picked a generational fight, saying Democrats should promote younger leaders like the GOP
Parkland, Florida, school shooting survivor David Hogg defended his "old" label of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi by saying Democrats should mimic the "young" leadership of the Republican Party. Hogg, 18, has become a March for Our Lives activist and the target of several high-profile conservatives in the months since the February 14 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting that left 17 students and staff dead. Hogg has gathered a massive social media following that's allowed him to lead advertiser boycotts of pro-gun figures. But a Daily Intelligencer profile published Sunday has seen him picking a new fight: old politicians. After receiving widespread backlash and calls for apologies from his base left-wing supporters, Hogg took to Twitter Tuesday to double-down on his view that baby boomers and older politicians need to relinquish power to the younger generation. The background on Hogg's Twitter profile perhaps illustrates his wider message succinctly: "The young … [Read more...] about David Hogg picked a generational fight, saying Democrats should promote younger leaders like the GOP
