Updated on May 16 at 9:35 a.m. ET Donald Trump is firing back at British Prime Minister David Cameron’s criticism of the presumptive Republican presidential nominee’s proposal to ban Muslims entering the United States. Cameron had described that plan as “divisive, stupid, and wrong.” In response, Trump told Good Morning Britain that if he won the presidency, It looks like we're not going to have a very good relationship. Cameron’s response, via his spokesman : “He stands by his comments.” Trump also used the occasion to criticize Sadiq Khan as “ignorant” after the new London mayor turned down the Republican’s offer to be an “exception” to his ban on Muslims, and called Trump “ignorant.” It is Khan, Trump argued, who is “ignorant.” “He doesn’t know me, hasn’t met me, doesn’t know what I’m all about,” Trump said. “I think they were very rude statements and, frankly, tell him I will remember those statements. They are very nasty statements.” … [Read more...] about ‘It Looks Like We’re Not Going to Have a Very Good Relationship.’

What’s Better in Britain
This September marks my fifth year of living in Britain, a milestone that comes with its own special reward: a test. Specifically, the “ Life in the U.K. Test ,” an examination that anyone seeking to obtain permanent residency rights in the country and ultimately British citizenship must take. The test covers all sorts of questions on Britain’s history—including such seeming trivia as the specific ways Henry VIII got rid of each of his six wives—its laws, its values, and its traditions. “Comedy and satire, the ability to laugh at ourselves, are an important part of the U.K. character,” reads one passage from the official study handbook. In another, pubs are described as “an important part of U.K. social culture.” Self-deprecating humor and pub culture are just some of the survival skills you naturally pick up if you live here long enough. But as I prepare for this exam, I can’t help but think about all the practical things about British life that the test-prep materials leave … [Read more...] about What’s Better in Britain
America’s Necessary Myth for the World
F or European officials and politicians, a great fear gnaws at the back of their minds when they look at the ongoing war in Ukraine : What happens if the United States loses interest? Despite the war being in Europe, involving European powers, with largely European consequences, America remains the essential partner for Ukraine. For most of Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, and Britain, in particular, the reality that Ukraine would likely already be lost were it not for American military support has only proved the intrinsic value of living in an American world order. For others, including the French, such dependence is now a source not only of shame, but of long-term vulnerability. America might care enough to supply Ukraine today, but with Donald Trump limbering up for his second shot at the presidency , it doesn’t take a huge leap of imagination to picture a time when this is no longer the case. And as French President Emmanuel Macron has warned, whichever American president is … [Read more...] about America’s Necessary Myth for the World
Phillip Schofield clearly unimpressed after Gyles Brandreth mocks pansexuality with ‘offensive’ joke
Phillip Schofield said so much and barely needed to open his moth after Gyles Brandreth’s comments on pansexuality during This Morning . On Monday’s episode, Phil and Holly Willoughby were discussing the latest news with Gyles and Camilla Tominey when their conversation turning to the Girl Guides’ new glossary of terms regarding gender and sexuality. As well as joking that ‘aromantic’ – having no interest in or desire for romantic relationships – meant you smell nice, the former politician also made a joke about pansexuality, which is defined in the glossary as ‘attraction for members of all gender identities/expressions’ Revealing an exchange they had off camera, Camilla turned to Gyles and laughed: ‘You said pansexual is having sex with kitchen equipment. We realised it wasn’t… Where is the offence actually taken? Who’s going to write into the Girl Guides?’ Phil quickly interjected: ‘Quite a number of pansexual people who might very well be offended right now.’ … [Read more...] about Phillip Schofield clearly unimpressed after Gyles Brandreth mocks pansexuality with ‘offensive’ joke

Sir Keir Starmer will later promise to "make Brexit work" as he outlines his party's plan to "end the Brexit divisions once and for all". The Labour leader will rule out rejoining the EU if he wins the next election, as well as pledging not to go back into the single market, customs union or returning to free movement agreements. Let us into 5G and we could pay millions for NZ cyber lab, says Huawei
China's Huawei says it could invest millions of dollars in a "cybersecurity evaluation centre" that would be under the control of the Government Communications Security Bureau. The lab could vet 5G and other equipment that Huawei and potentially other companies supplied to the country's telcos, Huawei NZ deputy managing director Andrew Bowater said. But GCSB director-general Andrew Hampton responded coolly, appearing to indicate the offer might not be enough to allay its concerns about Huawei's involvement in the industry. Huawei's proposal would mirror its arrangements in Britain under which Huawei pays "tens of millions" for a laboratory to check equipment it supplies both to the UK and to New Zealand. America Is in Denial
Even as we watch the reservoirs and lakes of the West go dry, we keep watering our lawns, soaking our golf courses, and growing water-thirsty crops. As inflation mounts and the national debt balloons, progressive politicians vote for ever more spending. As the ice caps melt and record temperatures make the evening news, we figure that buying a Prius and recycling the boxes from our daily Amazon deliveries will suffice. When TV news outlets broadcast video after video of people illegally crossing the nation’s southern border, many of us change the channel. And when a renowned conservative former federal appellate judge testifies that we are already in a war for our democracy and that January 6, 2021, was a genuine constitutional crisis, MAGA loyalists snicker that he speaks slowly and celebrate that most people weren’t watching. What accounts for the blithe dismissal of potentially cataclysmic threats? The left thinks the right is at fault for ignoring climate change and the … [Read more...] about America Is in Denial
