0 Have your say Aesop’s fable about the wind and the sun is a useful reminder that working with people is a better way of encouraging them to do the right thing. A bit like the wind’s relentless battering, we’ve gone on and on about five a day and as far as anyone can tell it’s not made a blind bit of difference for the last ten years. The Mrs Doyle messaging gets through – five a day is one of the most recognised public health campaigns in the world – but it doesn’t change what people eat. Nourish Scotland is part of an Industry Leadership Group to grow potato, fruit and vegetable consumption in Scotland through promoting health, taste and sustainability benefits. Now we and our partners at Peas Please in England and Wales are trying another tack. Sure, we are still on a health mission: eating too little veg is one of the main risk factors for cancer, and like the recent research on potatoes, we keep finding out new reasons why … [Read more...] about A better way to encourage sinners like me to eat veg

Eating alone? So often, it just seems easier to chuck something on a slice of toast for dinner when you’re dining solo, than go to the effort of cooking a whole proper meal. For food writer Janneke Vreugdenhil, her toast topping of choice was anchovies and avocado – if she could bring herself to eat at all. "After my husband left me three years ago, at first, I couldn’t eat," she remembers. "I’m a food writer so I’m used to cooking, food is a big part of my life. I get up in the morning and I think about food; I go to bed and I think about food, and suddenly, food was the last thing on my agenda. "I was so sad, I wasn’t hungry. I was losing weight and I felt miserable. Because divorce is not very good for your self-confidence and self-love, I didn’t love myself enough to think I was worth the trouble of cooking. Then one day I thought, ‘OK, I have to start taking better care of myself’." Don’t feel ‘silly’ cooking … [Read more...] about Food and Drink: There’s an art to eating solo

This year, it's set to be bigger than ever with Veganuary, a registered charity, predicting more than 150,000 people will go vegan for the month. Although the campaign was set up five years ago, this year its profile has grown - although not everyone is a fan. Piers Morgan recently tweeted: "Veganuary....what new special kind of Hell is this?" So, who takes part and why? Last year, there were 60,000 registered participants from 172 countries, and one of the 2015 participants was Charlotte Sims, from Droitwich. She said: "I was already vegetarian and had been since I was eight because of my love for animals. "I couldn't understand how I could have so much love for my pet cats and then be sitting down for dinner and eating cows and chickens. "Why love one animal and then eat another?! I was really passionate about being vegetarian and it never even crossed my mind … [Read more...] about Veganuary: What is it, how can I do it and where can I go to eat out?
