This was the moment a large group of men dragged a souped-up VW Golf back onto the roadway after it crashed following a suspected boy racer meet up. According to passers-by, the white Golf GTI smashed into a concrete bollard after veering off a roundabout in Coleshill . The incident took place at around 10.30pm on Sunday, April 22. An onlooker said: “A boy racer lost control on this roundabout and smashed into a concrete bollard. The location was Stonebridge Road just after the B4114 exit. “It’s a prime hot spot and boy racer meet-ups take place every Sunday. It was reported to the police but they just didn’t get there in time.” Footage of the collision shows a large gathering circling around the car which had significant front-end damage. A recovery truck arrived soon after before taking the vehicle away. West Midlands Ambulance Service was not called to the crash. Coleshill in North Warwickshire has been blighted by boy racers in recent years, with … [Read more...] about Crowd drag souped-up VW after smash during alleged racer meet

It’s got to rank up near the top of the most iconic cars ever, hasn’t it? Second only to the Beetle in terms of instantly recognisable VWs, most people’s minds will instantly go to the original – the Type 2 Microbus. But Volkswagen’s keen to remind potential buyers that the California has evolved – and so it invited us for a celebratory road trip around the American state from which it takes its name. The California name was first used on campers built by famed camping brand Westfalia. Never officially applied to a Type 2 or bay window camper, it first appeared on a T3 camper in 1988. Westfalia built another on the front-engined T4 platform, then VW itself took over production in 2003. The T5 California was the first to be officially built by Volkswagen in its own specialist … [Read more...] about Hotel California: We spend three days in VW’s iconic campervan
IT’S the littlest hooligan in town, the newest member of the GTI line-up and Volkswagen’s Up! city car is just bristling with fun. It joins the Polo and the iconic Golf in a triumvirate of GTI power. The last time there were three models in the series was in 2005 and, like all newcomers, the Up! just wants to make its presence felt. Volkswagen’s GTI series is legendary and something of an exclusive club. Models are carefully modified by VW’s engineers for extra power, performance and thrills. The ride height is reduced and the suspension set-up adjusted but not too hard, so that the car is in contact with the road for the maximum time possible. Tyres are bigger and rims larger for longer road contact, particularly when cornering. Anti-roll bars are strengthened and the steering tuned for maximum response and agility – and that delightful and precise feeling you get when driving a performance car. Finally, the aerodynamics are tweaked – a splitter … [Read more...] about Volkswagen Golf, Polo and Up!
Motoring by Press Association 20/04/2018, 2:07 pm FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmail Send us a story Sign up to our Daily newsletter What is it? There are few names more synonymous with hot hatchbacks than Volkswagen GTI. This is the new, smallest member of the family – the Up! GTI. Though it’s really a successor to the brilliant Lupo GTI of the 2000s, Volkswagen is actually pitching it as the spiritual successor to the original, 1976 Golf GTI. The comparison isn’t as ridiculous as you might think either – with similar weight, dimensions and power figures, this pocket rocket aims for maximum fun rather than maximum speed – much the same as the iconic original. What’s new? Though it’s wrapped up in a standard Up! body, the GTI model gains some serious upgrades over the standard car. First off, there’s the engine – a 1.0-litre TSI, as featured in top-spec Up!s – but here tuned to produce 113bhp and 200Nm of … [Read more...] about First drive: The Volkswagen Up! is the junior GTI we’ve been craving
FAMILY portraits are naff. You sit there looking awkward with a side-parting you didn’t want and wearing matching clothes you don’t like. You do it for your mum. But here’s a family photo you’d be proud to hang on your wall. All three Volkswagen GTIs – that’s Golf, Polo and now Up! – in the first triple track test. The baby Up! (115hp) has more beans than the original Mk1 Golf GTI (110hp) – and all from a tiny 1-litre three-cylinder engine. I liked it a lot.Golf GTI THE icon. The halo. Rock solid, classy, stunning engine, Jeremy Clarkson owns one – so it’s got to be pretty decent, right? Almost a third of all Golf sales in the UK are “Performance” cars – that’s GTI, GTE (plug-in hybrid), GTD (diesel) and R (310hp, all-wheel drive and sublime). The car you see here is the Golf GTI Performance version. Essentially, it’s a GTI tricked up with a mechanical front diff, bigger brakes and another 15 … [Read more...] about VW Up! joins the GTI family so we took all three out for a track test
