Coronavirus helps golf to bounce back in Japan

· January 5, 2021 ·

A symbol of wealth and social standing in Japan 40 years ago, golf suffered a deep downswing in its popularity after the nation's economic bubble burst in the early 1990s. With the advent of the coronavirus pandemic and a dramatic shift in the lifestyles of many Japanese, the sport is enjoying new-found popularity. The Golf Digest Online course reservation site reported a record number of bookings in calendar 2020, up 12% on the previous year, while the organization for golf course operators announced that player numbers were up 10% in October compared to that of the same month one year earlier, which was before the pandemic struck. Similarly, operators of golf driving ranges and companies selling golfing equipment and specialist clothing for the sport are all reporting increased sales. The recent boom in the sport is "incredible," says Bennett Galloway, president and CEO of the Galloway Golf Group and a player in Japan for 30 years. And he says that while it may have been … [Read more...] about Coronavirus helps golf to bounce back in Japan

World number one McIlroy teamed up with Dustin Johnson against Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff in Sunday's charity event at Seminole Golf Club, which raised money for coronavirus charities. President Trump was among the viewers and the keen golfer did a mid-competition interview. "It's about time!" he said in a phone interview. "It's a wonderful thing to see. I'm getting a little … [Read more...] about Donald Trump delighted by golf return as Rory McIlroy back in action

Rory McIlroy leads golf’s return and admits it’s great to give fans an escape from misery

· May 15, 2020 ·

Rory McIlroy says leading golf’s return in a charity match on Sunday will finally bring some joy to people amid the misery of coronavirus . The televised match, which takes place in Florida, will see the world No1 play with Dustin Johnson against Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff in a £3million skins game in aid of Covid-19 charities. With the backing of the PGA Tour, this will be seen as a first tentative step since the lockdown, with no professional golf having been played since the Players Championship was abandoned after one round on March 12. “For us to go out and play a golf match, it’s awesome that we can do that, bring some entertainment to quite a few people but also to help in some way,” said McIlroy. “What we’re doing is a great thing, it’s a very small piece of all this but I’m just happy to be able to help in some way and bring some joy to people, I guess, when they haven’t had anything to really look forward to for a couple of months.” European captain Padraig … [Read more...] about Rory McIlroy leads golf’s return and admits it’s great to give fans an escape from misery

Thomas was heard using the derogatory word towards himself after missing a par putt on the fourth hole at Kapalua, reports the Press Association. "There’s absolutely no reason for me to say anything like that. “It’s terrible. I’m extremely embarrassed. It’s not who I am. It’s not the kind of person that I am. "But it’s… unfortunately I did it and I have to own up to it and I’m very apologetic. “Like I said, it’s inexcusable. I’m speechless. It’s bad. There’s no other way to put it. I need to do better.
