Tiger Woods’ doctor reveals extent of golf ace’s devastating injuries after crash

· February 24, 2021 ·

Fans of Tiger Woods expressed fears for the star just days before his potentially fatal accident. As police confirmed the golfer’s seatbelt saved his life after losing control of his SUV at speed on Tuesday, worrying questions about his frame of mind began to swirl. Wood was rushing to meet American Football stars Drew Bees and Justin Herbert at a golf club where they were due to film for GolfTV when he crashed, shattering his legs. The star is said to have appeared “agitated and impatient” and almost smashed into a TV director’s car as he left an exclusive Los Angeles resort after becoming “blocked in” by another driver. Today, the former British Open champion was “awake” and “recovering” following lengthy surgery that has left questions marks hanging over his future career. Are you signed up to our newsletter? Coronavirus helps golf to bounce back in Japan

· January 5, 2021 ·

A symbol of wealth and social standing in Japan 40 years ago, golf suffered a deep downswing in its popularity after the nation's economic bubble burst in the early 1990s. With the advent of the coronavirus pandemic and a dramatic shift in the lifestyles of many Japanese, the sport is enjoying new-found popularity. The Golf Digest Online course reservation site reported a record number of bookings in calendar 2020, up 12% on the previous year, while the organization for golf course operators announced that player numbers were up 10% in October compared to that of the same month one year earlier, which was before the pandemic struck. Similarly, operators of golf driving ranges and companies selling golfing equipment and specialist clothing for the sport are all reporting increased sales. The recent boom in the sport is "incredible," says Bennett Galloway, president and CEO of the Galloway Golf Group and a player in Japan for 30 years. And he says that while it may have been … [Read more...] about Coronavirus helps golf to bounce back in Japan

Scottish golfing nostalgia is not what it used to be – just ask Sandy Lyle as he flies a lone Saltire at the Masters

· March 28, 2018 ·

M odernisation in golf can go way too far. After more than 150 years, the governing body of the ancient game has removed the signage for the Old Tom Morris Golf Shop adjacent to the 18 th green at St Andrews and replaced it with “The Open” branding. Why? The R&A is calling it the Open’s “flagship store” and the marketing types inevitably preach their valiant mission of progress. Yet it must be doubted if Old Tom would see it that way. With his own two magical hands, the undisputed Godfather of professional golf created clubs in his shop and looked on proudly as they would swarm the hallowed links of which he was custodian. Now the "outlet" sells cashmere jumpers to gullible Americans at £200 a pop. Stitched up by a machine overseas. Scottish golf plainly does not even do the history well anymore and that must be a worry because apart from the culture and courses, the Home of Golf has very little to shout about in the present. At next week’s Masters Sandy Lyle will be … [Read more...] about Scottish golfing nostalgia is not what it used to be – just ask Sandy Lyle as he flies a lone Saltire at the Masters

Donald Trump delighted by golf return as Rory McIlroy back in action

· May 18, 2020 ·

Donald Trump says it is "wonderful" to be watching the likes of Rory McIlroy playing golf again as the US President underlined the importance of getting sport back quickly for the "psyche" of the nation. The sporting calendar has been thrown into disarray by the coronavirus pandemic in recent months, but events are slowly beginning to return across the world. UFC has returned behind closed doors and the Bundesliga became the first top football league to resume this weekend, while there was live golf on TV in the form of the TaylorMade Driving Relief - a two-team skins challenge over 18 holes. World number one McIlroy teamed up with Dustin Johnson against Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff in Sunday's charity event at Seminole Golf Club, which raised money for coronavirus charities. President Trump was among the viewers and the keen golfer did a mid-competition interview. "It's about time!" he said in a phone interview. "It's a wonderful thing to see. I'm getting a little … [Read more...] about Donald Trump delighted by golf return as Rory McIlroy back in action

Tiger Woods facing “18-month rehab” after car crash warns top golf coach

· February 24, 2021 ·

Tiger Woods has been given hope that he can return to top-level golf by one-time Ryder Cup rival Thomas Levet. Levet broke his leg jumping into a lake to celebrate his victory at the 2011 French Open in one of the sport's most bizarre injury incidents and was back playing inside three months. But it was the experience of his wife Caroline – a leading French amateur who was also seriously hurt in a car crash - which persuades Levet that Woods is not yet finished. “I had only a broken fibula so Tiger's injury is very different but my wife suffered the same injuries as he has as an 18-year-old,” said Levet. “She was in a head-on crash - one car going 80kmh, the other 110kmh. She was in surgery for 15 hours. They operated on both her legs, feet and ankles. She could not walk for six months. But a year and a bit later, in 1988, she was playing for the French Open in a play-off. She couldn't run, walking tired her but she came back. And if she came back, Tiger can come back too.” … [Read more...] about Tiger Woods facing “18-month rehab” after car crash warns top golf coach
