Getting insurance for new car
A young driver has told how she watched in horror as her new car went up in flames - because someone torched it and she doesn’t know why. Neighbours rushed to move their vehicles to avoid the fire spreading, and said if firefighters hadn’t put the flames out before the petrol tank ignited, it could’ve caused serious damage or even injury. Police are investigating an apparently random arson attack on the car in the Sea Mills area of Bristol just before midnight on Thursday night. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus put out the fire, but not before it completely burnt out the vehicle. The car belonged to young mum-of-one Daniella Edwards, who is now appealing for any information about who went to some considerable lengths to torch her car, and why. She had parked it outside her mum’s house in Sunny Hill, Sea Mills, at around 7pm on Thursday night. “A car drove up Sunny Hill at around 11.35pm and set the car alight by putting petrol underneath the bonnet … [Read more...] about Young mum offers reward to find arsonist who torched new car
I have a 152 Toyota Auris Luna diesel with 60,000kms, as recommended by your column in the first place actually, so thanks. I commute 200km a day, all M1/M50. Traffic on the M50 has me changing through gears every 30 seconds, so I'd love an automatic. I spend about €300/m on diesel, so fuel efficiency is a massive consideration. I'm afraid I'm doing so much mileage now that my Auris will lose value quickly. Any thoughts on if I should change? Budget would be €5k plus trade-in. Gillian: The mileage on your car is just below average, so if you don't want to change just yet, you have another good six months at your current driving before you'd start feeling a pinch on value. I understand the desire for an automatic, so with your budget being around €18k, I have a few suggestions. I will stick with hatchback body-styles, but it might be tricky to find one that's newer than 152 because I'm presuming you will want to come up a year for your additional €5k. A VW Golf … [Read more...] about Switch to diesel? Best seven-seater? Buy for new year? €20,000 to spend?
The European Parliament wants to cut CO2 emissions from new cars and vans by 40 per cent by 2030 and will try to convince the European Union's 28 nations to back the idea despite objections from the car industry. The proposed cut agreed by legislators on Wednesday was a compromise between environmentalists who wanted tougher commitments and those who wanted to avoid too much damage to the auto sector. The EU nations will discuss the measures further this month. Car producers in the EU are warning that tough cuts would cost manufacturing jobs. Emissions cut: The European Parliament hsa voted to cut CO2 pollution from new cars and vans by 40 per cent by 2030 Car emissions have become a big issue in Europe since Volkswagen's scandal in September 2015 in which it admitted to rigging diesel engines to cheat on US emissions tests. That led to a wide-ranging examination of all diesels - and the discovery that many of them emitted far more pollutants on the road than in … [Read more...] about EU lawmakers vote to cut new car emissions by 40% by 2030
Councils in Kent have spent nearly £150,000 on luxury cars for mayors and chairmen over the last three years. The figures come from a freedom of information request from the TaxPayers’ Alliance, which claims millions could be saved nationally by encouraging local politicians to attend events using their own methods of transport.Yet councils have hit back, saying the costs are not excessive and that mayors generate publicity for local businesses and raise money for charity. Many also detailed how they have teamed up with firms in their district to secure free or cheaper leases of cars. The biggest spender was Kent County Council, which shelled out more than than £29,000 on three cars to ferry its chairman to various events.Medway Council followed closely behind with a bill of over £27,000 over the period. The most frugal councils were Ashford, Sevenoaks and Tonbridge and Malling, which do not run mayoral cars.Of those that did, the smallest spender was Canterbury, which … [Read more...] about Councils fork out £150k for mayoral cars
