Here's our advice on what causes acne, and how to get rid of those annoying scars... What causes acne? Acne is caused by tiny holes in the skin, called hair follicles, getting blocked. We have tiny glands all over our skin - which lubricate the face to stop it drying out, by producing an oily substance called sebum. When you have acne, the glands are producing too much sebum - and this mixes with dead skin cells to plug the follicle. If the plugged follicle is too close to the skin's surface, it bulges outward and causes a whitehead. But if the follicle is open to the skin, it creates a blackhead instead.
