Rattin's refusal delayed play for so long that by the next World Cup, in 1970, red and yellow cards had been introduced as universal symbols that required no further explanation. In 1986 what happened in the space of a few minutes was that everything that's possible in a game of football took place on the pitch, in full view of everyone watching, and it was … [Read more...] about How Diego Maradona redefined football
There's nothing like a major tournament for a future legend to break through on the global stage. The FIFA Best Young Player award – given to the best player aged 21 or younger at the World Cup – came in at Germany 2006 as a complement to the Golden Ball. The Best Young Player has been retrospectively awarded to standout youngsters from the previous dozen World Cups – from Korea/Japan 2002 back to the 1958 edition in Sweden – according to the results of a fan poll conducted on the FIFA website in 2009. Were any of these players one-tournament wonders? Or has the benefit of hindsight skewed the results in favour of some of the game's eventual greats? Mirror Football takes a look at what these winners did next. 2014: Paul Pogba (France) His future may be up in the air right now, but Pogba's stock has soared since the last World Cup. PUBLISHED: 19:00 05 March 2017 Dave Evans, West Ham Correspondent Wayne Bridge, Chelsea EMPICS Sport With Monday night’s Premier League clash between West Ham and Chelsea fast approaching, we look at the stars who have played for both? Joe Payne, Chelsea When it comes to players who have turned out for both West Ham and Chelsea, there is a rich seam of quality players who have made huge impressions, not only for their clubs but also on the international stage. There only seems to have been one goalkeeper in Craig Forrest, but there are a host of top class players who have not even made it into our top 11 stars. That means no place for the likes of multi-titled Wayne Bridge, who had as tough a time at West Ham as he did in ‘I’m a Celebrity’. There is no place for Hammers legend and Golden Boot winner Pop Robson, who played for the Blues in 1982/83, nor for another prolific scorer in Joe Payne, who once scored 10 goals in a game for Luton Town. … [Read more...] about West Ham and Chelsea: Who is the best player to have turned out for both?
