THE FA has announced that replays will return to the FA Cup up to the fourth round. Replays were scrapped from the third round onwards in last season's competition due to worries over fixture congestion. Several matches were postponed around the new year period when the third round was scheduled to take place. So to prevent fixture congestion the FA removed replays in both the third and fourth rounds. Replays were also scrapped for the 2020-21 campaign to relieve similar fears after the start of the season was delayed due to the pandemic. But now replays will be reintroduced to ties including qualifiers and all the way up to the fourth round. Fans fear ‘game is ruined’ as FIFA bring in offside technology for Qatar World Cup
Semi-automated offside technology will be used at the World Cup for the first time later this year - but football fans are not happy. Angry supporters are fed-up with constant meddling by the game's rule makers following the implementation of VAR and Arsene Wenger's proposed changes to the international match calendar. For many, the introduction of semi-automated offside technology represents the final straw. The new technology, which has already been tested at the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup and last year's FIFA Club World Cup , will see video match officials receive offside alerts, with decisions validated by humans before the match referee is informed. Scholz: Germans must ‘stick together’ over cost of living crisis
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Saturday urged the public to face the country's economic problems together, as inflation in Europe's leading economy remained stubbornly high. Scholz published a new video in his weekly podcast, admitting that rising prices were troubling many citizens . He called for the population to "link arms and stick together." Just days after data showed prices rose 7.6% in June compared to a year earlier, Scholz said he would convene a meeting of experts to tackle the cost of living crisis. The chancellor said he has invited trade unions, employers, the central bank (Bundesbank) and academics for a summit that kicks off Monday at the chancellery in Berlin. The campaign, dubbed "Concerted Action," echoes similar efforts by former West German chancellors in the 1960s and 1970s. Gaffe-prone culture secretary Nadine Dorries says her favourite Rugby League moment is Jonny Wilkinson's 2003 drop goal against Australia - in the Rugby Union World Cup final. Revealed: George Russell is most dominant F1 teammate of modern era
George Russell has a better record of beating his team-mate than any other driver to have started at least 50 races in the last 40 years, new analysis reveals. Russell, who is outperforming Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes so far in 2022, has finished ahead of his team-mate in 49 of his 69 Grands Prix since making his debut in 2019. His success rate of 71 per cent is better than all of the leading drivers going back to the early 1980s, when constructors were first limited to a maximum of two cars. Current world champion Max Verstappen is next on the list, having finished ahead of his team-mate in 97 of his 150 races to date (65 per cent), ahead of Fernando Alonso (65 per cent), Michael Schumacher (63 per cent) and Hamilton (61 per cent). Canadian Grand Prix 2017: Kimi Raikkonen has a point to prove as ‘little bits and pieces’ help Lewis Hamilton
Little bits and pieces. That was what Lewis Hamilton spoke of ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix on Friday. Little bits and pieces which Mercedes’s engineers have changed on the set-up of his car, and the sister model of team-mate Valtteri Bottas after they were squashed by Ferrari in Monte Carlo. Whatever those little bits and pieces were – and it’s believe that they centred upon minor adjustments such as brake balance and suspension settings in order to get the tyres working in their correct temperature window – they appeared to make a big difference here. The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Montreal’s Ile Notre Dame is a different track to Monaco in many ways – it’s much quicker for a start, with top speeds significantly exceeding 300 km/h and has a more slippery surface, but like the Principality it’s also one massive brake test. Its heavy demands on braking see drivers jumping hard on the left pedal for 19 per cent of the lap, and experiencing decelerative forces up to … [Read more...] about Canadian Grand Prix 2017: Kimi Raikkonen has a point to prove as ‘little bits and pieces’ help Lewis Hamilton
Canadian Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton emotional after equalling Ayrton Senna’s career pole record in qualifying
When Lewis Hamilton’s back is to the wall, he frequently produces his most awesome performances. And so it was on Montreal’s Ile Notre Dame at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve this afternoon, when the three-time champion took one of the greatest of his pole positions. In doing so he not only defeated arch-rival Sebastian Vettel in a gripping fight that electrified the 40,000 Quebecois race fans who flocked in, but equalled his idol Ayrton Senna’s tally of 65 poles. But that was not left him speechless afterwards. What stole his words and left him on the brink of tears of emotion as he was interviewed in Turn 2 was the surprise gift presented to him on behalf of the Senna family – a genuine race helmet worn when he was driving for Lotus in 1987, by the Brazilian who died at Imola on May 1st, 1994. Recommended Alonso could walk away from F1 if more races are added to the calendar After holding it aloft in its glass box, and then eagerly removing it to show … [Read more...] about Canadian Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton emotional after equalling Ayrton Senna’s career pole record in qualifying
Flawless Lewis Hamilton wins Canadian Grand Prix to slash Sebastian Vettel’s lead in the F1 championship
At one stage in the Canadian GP it seemed as if Lewis Hamilton was about to pull back all of his 25-point deficit to Sebastian Vettel, as the Englishman was leading comfortably while the German was in the pits having a new front wing fitted to his Ferrari. In the end, however, though he dominated to win his sixth Canadian GP on the tenth anniversary of his maiden success here a decade ago, finishing ahead of team-mate Valtteri Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo, Vettel was able to fight back to fourth place and limit the damage as he left Montreal still 12 points to the good. Hamilton was not too disappointed by that twist, happily savouring his 56 th career victory and his sixth here. The 2017 Formula 1 grid Show all 20 “It’s been an incredible weekend, and I couldn’t be happier,” he said. “For the team to come away from Monaco, where everyone was scratching their heads, it was fantastic that we all just wanted to work together, In five … [Read more...] about Flawless Lewis Hamilton wins Canadian Grand Prix to slash Sebastian Vettel’s lead in the F1 championship
Sebastian Vettel takes pole 40 years after Gilles Villeneuve triggered Ferrari’s Canadian love affair
Fernando Alonso might think F1 in its current guise is predictable – and it’s hard not to agree at times – but with the top four drivers covered by just 0.232s, and one of them electing to start on the softest tyre compound, Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix holds great promise. Sebastian Vettel ’s pole position was Ferrari ’s first here since Michael Schumacher back in 2001, and gave fans of the legendary team something to cheer on the circuit named in honour of Gilles Villeneuve, one of the Scuderia’s most-loved drivers of all time. Vettel struggled on Friday, damaging his car’s steering when he brushed a wall in first practice, and then failing to find its sweet spot in the second. But he reported a better feel immediately in final practice on Saturday morning, and made the most of that to set the fastest time in the first qualifying session, and then dominate the third with a new unofficial track record of 1m 10.764s. “I was very happy with the last qualifying … [Read more...] about Sebastian Vettel takes pole 40 years after Gilles Villeneuve triggered Ferrari’s Canadian love affair
