Prince’s plea to remember vital non-academic schemes in rush to catch-up schooling

· February 24, 2021 ·

Prince Edward has opened up about how his own experiences as a dad during the pandemic have highlighted the vital importance of schemes like the Duke of Edinburgh programme, set up by his father 65 years ago. Prince Philip 's youngest son told Sky News that projects such as the DofE awards for young people are "more important at this present time than ever before". His comments come as those behind the project warned that when schools re-open, the rush for pupils to catch up academically should not come at the expense of extra-curricular activities. The Earl of Wessex has been involved with the award scheme in the UK and overseas for 30 years. Asked if he was concerned about the push for young people to catch up with their studies when they return to school on 8 March, he said: "We mind desperately about trying to help them catch up with their academic career, but at the end of the day we're talking about what can we give young people at this time that's really going to … [Read more...] about Prince’s plea to remember vital non-academic schemes in rush to catch-up schooling

Amnesty strips Navalny of ‘prisoner of conscience’ status

· January 24, 2021 ·

Amnesty International said on Wednesday that it no longer recognizes jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny as a "prisoner of conscience." The global rights watchdog cited the politician's past "advocacy of hatred" as the reason behind its decision. It, however, did not mention any specific remarks made by him in the past. At the start of his political career a decade ago, Navalny drew criticism for his anti-immigrant statements. "Some of these comments, which Navalny has not publicly denounced, reach the threshold of advocacy of hatred, and this is at odds with Amnesty's definition of a prisoner of conscience," the London-based NGO said. Watch video 00:37 Borrell: 'We have to sanction the people who are directly related with his arrest' Amnesty continues to call for Navalny's release Over the past few years, Navalny has emerged as Russia's leading critic of President Vladimir Putin by publishing investigations into corruption and leading … [Read more...] about Amnesty strips Navalny of ‘prisoner of conscience’ status

Gaza to revise women’s travel ruling after backlash

· January 16, 2021 ·

The top Islamic judge in Gaza said on Tuesday that he would revise a recent controversial ruling that prohibited unmarried women from travelling without permission from their "male guardians", local media reported. The ruling, announced on Sunday, prompted a backlash from rights groups in Hamas-run Gaza , saying it violated anti-gender-discrimination Palestinian laws. Protesters marched against the decision to the office of the council's chairman, Hassan Jojo, who had approved the ruling. "We have agreed to redraft this ruling," Jojo told reporters, but he did not specify any changes to the decision, according to Reuters. The latest unemployment figures should send a chill down Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s spine

· February 23, 2021 ·

Don't max tax THE new unemployment figures should send a chill down Rishi Sunak’s spine. His upcoming Budget could so easily make matters worse. The Chancellor is focused on jobs, and rightly so. But almost every day brings a new leak of a worrying Treasury plan to raise this tax or that. Our views on the madness of hammering working people with extra fuel duty are well known. But hiking corporation tax from the low levels which helped the Tories conjure a job-creation miracle in the last recession is similarly crazy. Unemployment is at a five-year high . Once the furlough ends, the dole queue is likely to lengthen dramatically. Mr Sunak must learn from history. In the decades after World War Two, the US and West Germany encouraged the free market with lower taxes and far less state intervention. Britain maintained high taxes and a big state controlling vast swathes of the economy. America prospered. West Germany rose from its ruins to become … [Read more...] about The latest unemployment figures should send a chill down Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s spine

Vaccine side-effects, fertility and jab shortages – Van-Tam answers your questions

· February 24, 2021 ·

England's deputy chief medical officer Professor Jonathan Van-Tam has appeared on Sky News to answer some questions from the public on the coronavirus crisis. He shared his perspective on the public's queries and concerns on topics including the vaccine rollout, vaccine hesitancy and lifting the lockdown. Below are some of the key things from the Q&A, followed by a short analysis from science correspondent Thomas Moore , who offers his insight on each answer. 1. Since we hit the first 15 million jabs target there has been a drop-off in the daily vaccination numbers. Why? "That's really very simple to explain. There are always going to be supply fluctuations. These are new vaccines and by and large the manufacturers have never made them or anything like them before," Professor Van-Tam said. Advertisement Using one of his now-famous analogies Prof Van-Tam compared the manufacture of vaccines to beer-making. He said you set the equipment up and let … [Read more...] about Vaccine side-effects, fertility and jab shortages – Van-Tam answers your questions
