‘A clear danger’: oil spill in California city revives calls to cut ties with Chevron

· February 11, 2021 ·

Emergency crews in Richmond, California , are rushing to clean up an estimated 600 gallons of oil that spilled from a Chevron refinery into the San Francisco Bay. Details on the spill are still scant, but the emergency has reinvigorated calls from residents and environmentalists for the city to change its relationship with the refinery. The spill at the Chevron Wharf, which poured unabated for nearly two hours on Tuesday, cast a brownish sheen across the waters of the north-eastern part of the bay where harbor seals haul out, migratory birds skim the water, and residents live and recreate. “It smelled like somebody spilled gasoline in front of my house,” Richmond resident Margaret Berczynski told ABC News. “I cannot take my kids to the water, I cannot walk on water, I cannot enjoy it. I’m really scared,” she added. Sprawling across close to 3,000 acres on the peninsula hillsides overlooking the Pacific, Chevron’s Richmond refinery churns out 245,000 barrels of crude oil a … [Read more...] about ‘A clear danger’: oil spill in California city revives calls to cut ties with Chevron

Canada, UK sanction Myanmar generals

· January 18, 2021 ·

Britain and Canada imposed asset freezes and travel bans on generals behind Myanmar's recent coup as protesters, including state railway workers, continued calls Thursday for the release of political prisoners, including civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi . Targeted by Britain were three generals, Myanmar's Defense Minister Mya Tun Oo, Minister for Home Affairs Soe Htut, and his deputy Than Hlaing. Ottawa blacklisted the defense and home affairs ministers as well as seven other officials, freezing any assets they had in Canada as well as potential financial dealings with them. Already the US had imposed sanctions on the leaders of Myanmar's February 1 military coup. Canadian Foreign Minister Marc Garneau said Ottawa's move was part of a "united response" over the military's "disregard" for Myanmar democratic rights. Ecuador protesters defy military warning with mass rallies

· September 10, 2019 ·

Thousands of anti-government protesters held rallies in Ecuador on Wednesday, defying a warning by the military on holding "violent" demonstrations as unrest over a fuel price hike continues.  The protesters are members of labor unions and indigenous groups demanding that Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno either step down or reinstate fuel subsidies that were rescinded on October 3, following a $4.2 billion (€ 3.8 million) loan agreement with the International Monetary Fund. The move reportedly increased fuel prices by 120%. Demonstrators in the capital, Quito, tried to get close to the government headquarters in the colonial-era Carondelet palace, which had been cordoned off by police. Some of the protesters reportedly threw stones at police, who responded by firing tear gas. Other groups of demonstrators reportedly blocked streets in the city. On Tuesday, after thousands of protesters stormed the parliament building in the capital, Moreno moved … [Read more...] about Ecuador protesters defy military warning with mass rallies

Ecuador election: Andres Arauz claims “victory” in first round

· July 2, 2021 ·

Andres Arauz claimed victory in Ecuador's presidential election on Sunday, but urged supporters to wait for the official results, which are expected to be out tonight, before celebrating. According to two exit polls, Arauz won the vote with 34.9-36.2%, with rival Guillermo Lassotrailing behind at 21-21.7%. To win the election in Ecuador, a candidate has to win 50% plus one vote or 40% and a 10-point lead over the rival. Failing this, the election will go to a run-off round. Who is Arauz? Arauz is a protégé of Rafael Correa, the former president of Ecuador. Correa fled the country under the presidency of his former ally Moreno after being accused of corruption for which he was convicted in absentia. He remains popular in his home country for presiding over economic prosperity driven by an oil boom and loans from China which funded social programs. His conviction barred him from running as Arauz's vice-presidential running mate. Ecuador is suffering from an economic downturn, … [Read more...] about Ecuador election: Andres Arauz claims “victory” in first round
