The shop where packaging is banned – meet the couple tackling Britain’s waste problem and winning
A packet of crisps today can have up to seven layers of wrapping - that’s a whole lot of plastic and foil. In fact, the world is producing 20 times more plastic now than it did 50 years ago – a number that’s fast growing – despite politicians and campaigners calling for a ‘zero waste economy’. But did you know that just one plastic carrier bag can take up to 100 years to decompose? Senegal restricts internet as protests escalate
Senegal saw continued violence on Friday as police and supporters of detained opposition leader Ousmane Sonko returned to the streets amid mixed reports of restricted internet access and two days of protests that have left one person dead. The leader of the Pastef party, Sonko was arrested for disturbing public order on Wednesday as he made his way to a court appearance to deny rape charges in the West African country. As he appeared before the court on Friday to defend himself against what he says are politically motivated charges designed to sideline him in the future, police fired tear gas at protesters outside the Dakar courthouse. Authorities had also banned motorcycles and mopeds, often ridden by Sonko's young supporters, from the streets of the capital. "I don't think things will be calm. People are rising up," said Souleymane Diallo, a 24-year-old fashion worker who pointed out that the pandemic-linked curfew and dissatisfaction with President Macky Sall were also … [Read more...] about Senegal restricts internet as protests escalate
