Human rights organization Amnesty International said on Friday that "hundreds" of people were massacred by Eritrean troops in Ethiopia's northern Tigray region last November. Amnesty's Jean-Baptiste Gallopin, who conducted numerous interviews with residents and witness from the historical town of Axum, where the alleged massacre took place, told DW: "The perpetrators were Eritreans." "We interviewed 41 residents and witnesses from Axum over two research missions," he continued. "So we're pretty confident in our findings. We also used satellite imagery that allowed us to corroborate the burial sites." In addition, Gallopin said there had been "indiscriminate shelling on the city and looting by Eritrean forces." Police watchdog orders forces to explain why black and ethnic minorities are subjected to more stop and searches
THE POLICE watchdog has ordered forces to explain why black and ethnic minorities are subjected to more stop and searches than whites. Police were also urged to consider scrapping stops for possession of drugs because they are said to contribute to the racial disparity. A report from Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS) said the disproportionate use of police powers risks losing trust of communities. The watchdog highlighted the death of George Floyd in the US as an example of the potential fall-out when police interaction with ethnic minorities goes wrong. Black people are almost nine times more likely to be stopped and searched than whites, according to latest Home Office data for 2019/20. They are also over 5.5 times more likely to have force used on them by cops than white people, have eight times more chance of being handcuffed and a nine-fold prospect of having a Taser drawn on them. Stop and search has been … [Read more...] about Police watchdog orders forces to explain why black and ethnic minorities are subjected to more stop and searches
Sick dad, 59, who filmed himself violently raping his partner’s baby niece jailed
A "monster" who filmed himself violently raping his partner's baby niece has been jailed for 16 years. The 59-year-old, who cannot be named to protect his victims' identities, subjected the six-month-old child to a "violent and degrading sexual assault", a court heard. The defendant, from Tipperary, Ireland, a dad himself, also secretly recorded four other girls when they used the bathroom, reports the Irish Mirror. During sentencing earlier today, Mr Justice Alexander Owens said the offences - which took place over seven months to August 2019 - involved "acting out violent fantasies of having sex with very young children". He added it was "highly exploitative". The judge said he could have imposed a life sentence but considered a lengthy custodial term would be more proportionate. The final two years of the sentence are suspended reliant on several conditions and the defendant must undergo six years of post-release supervision. Mr Justice Owens said the other victims … [Read more...] about Sick dad, 59, who filmed himself violently raping his partner’s baby niece jailed

Wife of murdered airline exec ‘played grieving widow while having affair with killer’
An airlines executive's wife is accused of 'playing the grieving widow' on TV despite having "a full-blown emotional affair” with the man accused of killing him. Jennifer Lynne Faith has been charged with obstruction of justice following the death of her husband James “Jamie” Faith in Dallas, Texas. The 48-year-old's husband James, an IT director for American Airlines, was gunned down while the couple were out on a morning walk with their dog. Prosecutors say that she communicated with the alleged gunman, her high school sweetheart, and pushed him to get rid of evidence — all the while publicly pleading for information about the case. Describing the fatal attack, Mrs Faith told NBCDFW back in December: "I heard running behind me, and I turned around and all of a sudden somebody just started shooting at him. “My hope is that someday perhaps the person will realise the gravity of what they’ve done. “He was just the backbone of our family. It was just devastating.” … [Read more...] about Wife of murdered airline exec ‘played grieving widow while having affair with killer’
