There’s no way of knowing that though, because there’s nothing to go on and you’re left trying to predict Nintendo, which as everyone should know is a one-way route to madness. They haven’t at the moment, everything is just 2022, so if that continues beyond the point you’d expect them to announce more I think that’s a good indication. FIFA wants to charge EA Sports $1 billion to use video game name
The reason EA is planning to change the name of the FIFA games has been revealed: FIFA want to charge them twice as much to use their name. Considering FIFA 22 has proven an even faster seller than last year’s game, it was a bit of a shock to hear that EA is thinking of changing the name in the future. They’ve already registered the name EA Sports FC but so far they’ve not revealed why they would want to do such a thing – although it was always pretty obvious that either they or FIFA were asking for more money. It turns out that it’s the former, with a report in The New York Times revealing that FIFA want more than double the amount of money EA usually pays to use their name and licences, while also limiting how much they can use it outside of video games. FIFA wants more than $1 billion for the right to use its name for four years, covering a single World Cup cycle – which is more than twice what EA currently pays them. League Of Legends has banned /all chat in games because of toxic players
Riot has taken the extreme step of preventing players from chatting to each other in League Of Legends, unless they’re on the same team. Although there’s a grey area around Minecraft and Roblox, League Of Legends is generally regarded as the most popular video game in the world, in terms of the number of regular players. Since it’s also free that means there are millions of people playing it every month, and those players have long held a reputation for being unhelpful and abusive towards newcomers. The situation has got so bad that Riot is removing the option to chat to everyone at once in public matchmade queues, meaning you’ll only ever be able to talk to teammates – except after a match if you want to. Since a lot of abuse happens between teammates, with more experienced players complaining about everyone else, that’s not going to solve every problem, but it is an acknowledgement of how toxic League Of Legends’ community can be. Weirdly, I’m kind of sympathetic to EA’s position here as what FIFA is doing is just naked greed but while EA can probably do without the name what if another big company decided to buy the FIFA licence if they gave it up? Activision could afford it, but they never seem to have made any sports games, although if they wanted to this would be an obvious way in. 2K seem the obvious alternative though, as they have several sports games already and know how to milk every cent out of people with microtransactions. I don’t know what they’d be able to do in terms of club and player names but it sounds like they would definitely have exclusive rights to the World Cup, which is definitely something to work a game …
